Microsoft Internally Moves To Github Cli Over Claude Code

Microsoft is reportedly ending internal access to Anthropic’s Claude Code for many employees as the company shifts developers toward its own GitHub Copilot CLI platform.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Microsoft is cancelling most internal Claude Code licenses by the end of June.
  • The company wants engineers to move to GitHub Copilot CLI.
  • The decision appears tied to both product strategy and cost cutting.
  • Many employees reportedly preferred Claude Code over Copilot due to better features.

What Happened?

Microsoft is preparing to scale back the use of Anthropic’s Claude Code inside the company after months of internal testing and adoption. The move comes less than six months after Microsoft expanded access to the AI coding assistant for thousands of employees, including developers, project managers, and designers.

The company is now encouraging teams to transition their workflows to GitHub Copilot CLI, Microsoft’s own command line AI coding tool built around GitHub’s ecosystem.

Microsoft Changes Direction on AI Coding Tools

Microsoft first opened access to Claude Code in December as part of a broader experiment to see how AI coding assistants could improve internal development workflows. Employees across major divisions were invited to test the tool for coding, prototyping, debugging, and experimentation.

According to reports, Claude Code quickly became one of the more popular AI tools among Microsoft engineers. Many employees reportedly preferred it over GitHub Copilot because of its stronger capabilities and smoother developer experience.

However, Microsoft is now consolidating around Copilot CLI as its primary command line coding assistant.

For developers building on Microsoft’s stack, tooling shifts like this sit alongside a broader skill path, Azure development, certified through the AZ-204 exam, which many study for using practice resources such as TestKing.

The transition is expected to affect teams working on major Microsoft products including:

  • Windows
  • Microsoft 365
  • Outlook
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Surface

Internal discussions suggest that Microsoft’s Experiences and Devices division plans to fully wind down most Claude Code usage before the end of June.

Financial Timing May Have Influenced the Move

While Microsoft says the shift is about aligning engineering workflows around a single platform, reports suggest there is also a financial reason behind the decision.

Microsoft’s financial year ends on June 30. By cancelling Claude Code licenses before the new fiscal year begins in July, the company could reduce operating expenses and simplify internal AI tooling costs.

This timing has raised questions because the move comes despite Claude Code reportedly receiving strong feedback from developers inside Microsoft.

The company has not publicly framed the decision as a rollback on Anthropic technology itself. Instead, Microsoft appears focused on strengthening its own ecosystem around GitHub Copilot.

Microsoft Wants More Control Over the Platform

Rajesh Jha, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President for Experiences and Devices, explained the decision in an internal memo shared in reports.

Jha said:

“

When we began offering both Copilot CLI and Claude Code, our goal was to learn quickly, benchmark the tools in real engineering workflows, and understand what best supported our teams.

Rajesh JhaExecutive Vice President for Experiences and Devices – Microsoft

He added that Claude Code played an important role during the evaluation phase, but said GitHub Copilot CLI offers Microsoft something more valuable long term because the company can directly shape its development.

“

Copilot CLI has given us something especially important: a product we can help shape directly with GitHub for Microsoft’s repos, workflows, security expectations, and engineering needs.

Rajesh JhaExecutive Vice President for Experiences and Devices – Microsoft

Jha also described the move as a shared effort between Microsoft leadership and GitHub teams to improve Copilot CLI into the company’s main AI coding platform.

Anthropic Partnership Still Remains Active

Despite the internal license cuts, Microsoft is not ending its broader relationship with Anthropic.

Reports indicate that Anthropic’s AI models will still be available inside Copilot CLI alongside OpenAI models and Microsoft’s own AI systems. Microsoft also continues to provide Anthropic models through its Foundry platform.

Some Microsoft 365 and Copilot features are also said to use Claude models for specific tasks where they reportedly perform better.

This means the company is not completely stepping away from Anthropic technology. Instead, Microsoft appears to be narrowing how and where those tools are used internally.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think this move says more about Microsoft’s long term AI strategy than just cost cutting. Even if employees preferred Claude Code, Microsoft clearly wants tighter control over the tools its engineers use every day. Owning the platform, workflows, and ecosystem matters more to the company than relying too heavily on a third party AI coding assistant. The interesting part is whether developers will actually enjoy moving back to Copilot CLI if Claude Code truly offered a better experience.
