Have I Been Pwned added 1.6 million RingCentral account records to its breach database on Thursday, August 13, after analyzing the archive that the ShinyHunters extortion group published when the company refused to pay.

How It Happened?
RingCentral traced the breach to what it called a sophisticated social engineering campaign, a description the company has not expanded on since. It said it cut off the unauthorized access on detection, brought in an outside forensic firm, and has seen no further intrusion activity since.
ShinyHunters had posted RingCentral to its Tor leak site on July 27, claiming 623GB of stolen data. RingCentral refused to pay to have that data destroyed. About a week later the group published a compressed 280GB archive of files it says came from the company.
Have I Been Pwned then worked through the dump and reached the 1.6 million count, with each email address sitting alongside a name, a phone number and a physical address. The service logged the incident as a pay-or-leak extortion campaign. RingCentral has neither confirmed the group’s claims nor offered a figure of its own.
The Notification Gap
RingCentral’s security bulletin tells customers to read silence as safety. “If you are not contacted by RingCentral, you are not affected,” the company said, adding that the incident touched a limited portion of its customer base and left the core platform running normally.
That guidance sits awkwardly against a data set this size. RingCentral sells to businesses, more than 600,000 of them, so its direct customer is usually a company. The individual whose name, phone number and street address sits in the archive may never hear anything, because the notified account belongs to an administrator.
The archive proves that personal records left RingCentral’s environment and reached a public leak site. It does not prove anyone has used them, and neither the company nor Have I Been Pwned has said the data has been abused.
Four questions RingCentral has left open:
- Which employee, contractor or supplier the social engineering targeted, and how that access reached customer records?
- Why a limited portion of customers corresponds to a data set this large?
- How many individuals the company has notified so far?
- Whether the published archive is the full haul, given the larger volume ShinyHunters originally claimed?
Anyone in the RingCentral entry has a pretexting problem before an account problem. A full name, a working phone number and a street address are the raw material for the kind of fake IT support call covered in social engineering attack statistics. Treating any unsolicited call or email that references RingCentral or account verification as hostile until confirmed through a known number helps reduce that risk. Silence from the vendor is not evidence of safety.
ShinyHunters Keeps Working The SaaS Layer
ShinyHunters has spent the past year inside cloud platforms and the integrations wired into them. The group’s claimed record:
- Hundreds of Salesforce customers breached over the past year, chronicled in the group’s Salesforce extortion campaign.
- Over 1.5 billion records taken in the Salesloft Drift and Salesforce Aura campaigns.
- More than a dozen Snowflake customers hit after a SaaS integrator was compromised.
- Over 100 organizations breached most recently through an Oracle PeopleSoft zero-day flaw.
Most of those totals are the group’s own numbers, and none of them establishes the RingCentral entry point. RingCentral has not said which system was reached or whether a third-party integration played any part. The common thread running through those campaigns is the trust an organization extends to its connected SaaS tools, which is the layer other providers of similar scale should be auditing.
Why It Matters?
The data in this leak does not expire. Passwords get changed and cards get reissued, but a name, a phone number and a street address stay valid for years, which keeps the archive useful long after the incident is closed. A business phone provider raises the stakes further, because a caller who can name your communications vendor and read your own address back to you sounds a lot like your IT department.
RingCentral still has to confirm or dispute the attacker’s figures, and that statement is the next thing to watch. Breach notification filings would attach an official number to the exposure. Companies running on the platform should expect Have I Been Pwned alerts to reach their staff before any letter from the vendor arrives. Reviewing which internal directories and accounts are reachable through connected third-party tools helps reduce exposure to the same attack pattern, though it does nothing about records already published.
