Wispr raised $280 million in Series B funding on Monday, valuing the San Francisco AI dictation startup at $2 billion as it pushes into meeting transcription and new voice hardware.

The Big Picture

  • Wispr closed a $280 million Series B led by Menlo Ventures, pushing its valuation to $2 billion.
  • The round brings Wispr’s total funding to $361 million, arriving less than 10 months after its last raise.
  • Wispr’s new speech model, Canto, is built to cut dictation error rates from 30% to under 10%.
  • The startup is expanding into meeting transcription with a note-taker built to compete with Granola, Fireflies, and Read AI.
  • New backers Acrew, Forerunner, Goodwater, Peak XV, Together Fund, and PLUS Capital joined returning investors Notable Capital, NEA, and 8VC.

Menlo Ventures Leads Wispr’s $280 Million Round

Wispr, led by CEO Tanay Kothari, confirmed the funding Monday. The Series B lifts the company’s total capital raised to $361 million, most of it collected within a year. Wispr closed a $25 million round with Notable Capital in November 2025, less than 10 months before this week’s raise.

The round’s investor list also includes athletes Shaun White, Dak Prescott, Joe Burrow, Klay Thompson, and Paul George, alongside venture firms Acrew, Forerunner, Goodwater, Peak XV, Together Fund, and PLUS Capital. Existing backers Notable Capital, NEA, Neo Ventures, 8VC, and MVP Ventures increased their stakes as well.

Canto Aims to Fix a Recent Quality Slip

Wispr’s dictation quality took a hit this summer. Several users flagged a drop in transcription accuracy on X over the past few weeks, and the complaints kept surfacing into August. Wispr said its new speech model, Canto, will reduce the error rate from 30% to under 10%.

Since November, Wispr has released a dictation app for Android and scaled its go-to-market teams in India and the U.K. It has also partnered with hardware makers such as Oasis, whose ring lets users dictate without speaking aloud, extending Flow beyond the keyboard entirely.

Wispr Chases Meetings Next

The fresh capital funds Wispr’s move into meetings. Its new note-taker displays summaries and action items, and Wispr has scope to add integrations that update other tools or draft documents and emails. An AI email assistant built by Perplexity shows the same drafting ambitions taking hold elsewhere in the AI productivity market. Wispr serves millions of users across more than 125,000 companies, giving it a sizable base to convert to meeting notes.

Last month, Wispr launched Wispr Interface Labs, run by Ariya Rastrow, an early engineer on Amazon Alexa. The lab is exploring interaction models beyond typing and tapping, a longer-term bet that sits apart from the note-taker’s near-term rollout.

The Dictation and Notes Market Gets Crowded

Wispr’s expansion lands in a field already crowded with voice AI dictation tools competing on price and privacy, plus a separate cluster chasing the meetings category.

  • Willow: a dictation rival pitched at professionals who want fewer typos in daily writing.
  • Monologue: pairs voice dictation with bot-free meeting notes in one app.
  • Superwhisper: a lower-priced dictation tool aimed at prosumers rather than enterprise buyers.
  • Granola: captures individual meeting notes without a bot joining the call.
  • Fireflies: a transcription and notes platform built for sales and recruiting teams.
  • Read AI: scores meeting engagement alongside its note-taking function.

The AI funding market has produced comparable jumps this year, including Perplexity’s $200 million raise to a $20 billion valuation and OpenAI’s push into real-time voice AI with its Realtime 2 launch.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

This round confirms investors view voice as more than a convenience layer bolted onto typing. Wispr’s jump to a $2 billion valuation in under a year signals that backers expect voice interfaces, beyond dictation alone, to become a default way people work with software. The bet also covers the company’s stumble: Wispr is pairing the accuracy fix with the funding news rather than quietly patching it later, which keeps this week’s story about growth instead of damage control.

Wispr’s next test is whether its note-taker can hold up against Granola, Fireflies, and Read AI, tools with a head start in the meetings category. Wispr Interface Labs’ work on new interaction models will take longer to show results, and the integrations that would let the note taker draft documents or emails still sit at the roadmap stage. Users who rely on Wispr Flow today should watch for the Canto rollout and check their own accuracy before assuming the fix has landed everywhere at once.
