OpenAI’s desktop client reaches Linux for the first time, carrying ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and the Codex coding agent to Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora machines in preview.

  • OpenAI put its ChatGPT desktop app on Linux for the first time, in preview.
  • The app carries three products in one client. ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex.
  • Supported systems are desktop variants of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44.

OpenAI released the ChatGPT desktop app for Linux in preview, the company said in a post from its official X account, putting its Codex coding agent on the operating system most developers deploy to for the first time.

The client bundles ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex together. OpenAI said users can work “with your projects and browser workflows on supported Linux systems,” the same project and browser hooks the Windows and macOS builds already carry. Support is limited to desktop variants of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44.

Packaging is conventional. “Install with .deb or .rfpm packages for x64 or ARM64,” OpenAI wrote. That ARM64 line does more work than it looks like it does, because ARM64 is now the shape of a cloud instance, a dev board, and a growing share of corporate laptops.

The gap that mattered was Codex, not chat

Chat in a browser tab already worked fine on Linux. Codex did not travel as well. OpenAI gave the agent the ability to see, click, and type on a user’s machine when it shipped desktop control for Codex, and that capability landed on macOS. The company has separately been pushing Codex-style agents toward isolated execution through sandboxed workspaces in its Agents SDK, which keep credentials away from the harness running the task.

A Linux client closes the distance between where the agent runs and where the code actually gets built. It does not, on the evidence of the post, prove that everything Codex does on macOS now does the same thing on Fedora.

What the announcement leaves open?

OpenAI’s post confirms availability and nothing beyond it. Four questions go unanswered in the text. Whether Codex desktop control works on Linux at all. Whether the client supports Wayland, X11, or both. When the preview label comes off. Why Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Arch, and openSUSE are absent from a list that already spans both Debian and RPM packaging.

Anyone who has already installed it should treat a preview as a preview. Pulling the package from OpenAI’s own distribution channel rather than a mirror helps reduce the risk of a tampered build, and holding ChatGPT Work off a managed work machine until IT signs off avoids a policy argument later. Linux desktops are not a quiet corner of the estate either.

Whether the supported list grows is the tell. Debian and RPM packaging already reaches most of the enterprise Linux world. The four names OpenAI picked look like a support decision, not a technical ceiling.
