Amazon began rolling out Alexa+ to all compatible Fire TV devices in the United States on August 19, 2026, at no additional cost. The AI assistant previously cost $19.99 per month for customers without a Prime membership.

The Big Picture

  • Amazon is rolling out Alexa+ to all compatible Fire TV devices in the US at no additional cost.
  • Fire TV customers without a Prime membership previously paid $19.99 per month to use the same assistant.
  • The upgrade happens automatically, with no app to download, no subscription to start, and no action from the customer.
  • Amazon says Fire TV owners hold nearly twice as many conversations with Alexa+ as they did with the original Alexa.
  • Compatible hardware includes current Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and some Hisense and Panasonic sets.

Amazon drops the $19.99 Alexa+ tier on Fire TV

The rollout covers all current-generation Amazon Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and third-party sets with Alexa+ built in, including models from Hisense and Panasonic. Eligible customers receive the upgrade whether or not they pay for Prime.

Amazon stated the terms plainly in its announcement: “There’s no action required, no app to download, and no subscription to activate. Just use your Fire TV as you normally would.” Alexa+ reached Fire TV first on the hardware Amazon introduced last fall.

Paying customers still get more. A Prime membership or an Alexa+ Standard Plan subscription unlocks Alexa+ on compatible Echo devices, plus Alexa Routines, access to specific Ring camera moments, and advanced Home Modes on the TV itself.

What the assistant does on the TV screen?

Alexa+ handles conversational search, so a viewer can ask for “a top-rated thriller” and then narrow it with “something newer” or “with a female lead” instead of naming a title. Amazon says customers now pick Alexa’s top recommendation for search queries over 40% more often than they did with the original Alexa, and hold nearly twice as many conversations on Fire TV.

Both figures are relative and Amazon has not published the underlying counts, so they show more talking, not measurably better viewing choices.

Beyond search, Amazon lists a set of everyday commands the assistant now runs from the TV:

  • Moving a Prime Video title from one Fire TV in the home to another by voice.
  • Pulling a live Ring camera feed onto the screen with a request like “show the front door.”
  • Dimming compatible lights and adjusting scenes for a movie night.
  • Locking a paired smart lock, checking sports scores, or setting a kitchen timer hands-free.

Those household commands have become one of the most popular uses of Alexa+ on Fire TV, which puts the television at the center of the connected home. Smart home adoption data shows the size of that installed base.

What Amazon has not said?

The announcement leaves several questions open. Amazon has not said whether a customer can decline the upgrade or revert to the original assistant. It has not given a device count for the rollout, a date for markets outside the US beyond “additional devices and regions may be added over time,” or an explanation of how a formerly paid assistant pays for itself as a free default.

Fire TV owners already running Ring cameras or smart locks on the same Amazon account have one thing worth checking today. The upgrade routes those devices to a screen in a shared room, where a spoken request can surface a live camera feed for anyone sitting there. Reviewing which devices are paired to the account, and who in the household can trigger them by voice, helps reduce the risk of an unintended disclosure. It does not remove that risk.

Rivals moved on TV assistants first

Amazon is following a pattern its competitors set. Google brought Gemini to its Google TV platform earlier this year, replacing basic search with conversational modes, and Roku upgraded its voice assistant to an AI system last year. All three shipped the change as an automatic upgrade rather than an opt-in feature.

The common thread is placement. The television was the last major screen in the house without a chat interface on it, and the three largest US streaming platforms have now closed that gap. Streaming market share figures show how much viewing time sits on those platforms.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

The pricing move carries more weight than the feature list. Alexa+ went from a $19.99 monthly product to a default setting on devices customers already own, a trade that values placement on the living room screen above subscription revenue. Amazon keeps the paid tier for Echo devices and the deeper automation features, so the free Fire TV version works as the on-ramp to a paid subscription.

What’s next: the upgrade lands on eligible US devices without a prompt, so owners of compatible hardware should expect the interface to change on its own. Amazon has committed to more devices and more regions without attaching dates to either. The paid tier is the part to watch, because Routines, Home Modes and Ring camera moments now have to justify a subscription on their own. Google and Roku face the follow-on question of whether their assistants stay behind a paywall at all.
