Meta released a dedicated Mac app for its AI assistant on August 19, 2026, shipping as a 1.0 beta that reads the contents of a shared window but cannot act on it. Rival desktop assistants from OpenAI and Anthropic already control the machine.

Key Takeaways

  • Meta shipped a Mac app for its AI assistant as a 1.0 beta on August 19, 2026.
  • The app installs at 16 megabytes and runs natively on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 15 or later.
  • Window sharing lets the assistant read visible text and take a screenshot after the user grants Screen Recording and Accessibility permission.
  • Meta AI can now connect to Instagram and Facebook accounts, Meta ad campaigns, and Google Workspace.
  • Dictation types spoken words into any Mac app, and a shortcut called Quick Invoke opens a composer over the current window.

What We Know?

Meta announced the Meta AI desktop app alongside business and creator features that reach the web, mobile, and Mac versions of the assistant at once. The company says a user can attach an open Mac window to a conversation, then ask questions or generate content from what is on the screen.

The build is unusually lean for an assistant client. According to 9to5Mac, which inspected the release, the app installs at 16 megabytes and runs natively on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 15 or later, using an AppKit and SwiftUI shell with WebKit for richer chat content. It avoids Electron and iPad repackaging, the two shortcuts most desktop chatbots take.

Two keyboard hooks carry the Mac-specific work. Quick Invoke maps Option-Space to a compact composer that floats over whatever app is open. A separate dictation shortcut types spoken words into Mail, a document, or a code editor. Users can hide the Dock icon and run the whole thing from the keyboard.

Window attachment is where the permission cost shows up. The app needs Screen Recording and Accessibility access before it reads a window’s visible text and captures a screenshot for the next question. The sidebar adds Media, Artifacts, scheduled tasks, conversation history, and an About Me panel.

For businesses and creators, the assistant connects to Instagram and Facebook accounts, Meta ad campaigns, and Google Workspace. Meta’s example use case is analyzing a post’s reach, likes, shares, and saves to suggest what to publish next. The app can also pull from a business account and the web to build decks, docs, and spreadsheets, and run standing jobs such as a weekly performance update.

Where Meta Sits Among Desktop Assistants?

Meta arrives late to a crowded Mac dock. Google’s Gemini app already supports window sharing on macOS. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude go further and can operate the computer directly, clicking and typing for the user. Perplexity ships its own Mac assistant app as well.

That gap matters more than a feature checklist suggests. Reading a window answers the question “what am I looking at.” Operating a window answers “do this for me.” Meta’s app does the first one today, and 9to5Mac describes the capture as context gathering rather than computer control for now.

What We Don’t Know?

The evidence in Meta’s announcement and the 9to5Mac inspection shows the app capturing text and images from a chosen window. It does not show the app clicking, typing, or moving files. Several questions sit unanswered:

  • How long Meta keeps the screenshots and window text captured during a shared session, and whether that material trains models?
  • Whether computer control is planned, and on what timeline?
  • Which countries and languages the 1.0 beta covers?
  • Whether the Instagram, Facebook, and ad-account connections can publish or only read?
  • What the app will cost once the beta ends?

Anyone who already installed the beta can open System Settings, review the Screen Recording and Accessibility grants under Privacy and Security, and revoke them between sessions. That step helps reduce what the app can see going forward, though it does not undo captures already taken. Businesses that linked an ad account should confirm which account the app attached to, a check that applies to every desktop assistant with screen access.

Why It Matters?

A desktop client makes the past six months of Meta AI work reachable while someone is actually working. Muse Spark replaced Llama in April, voice conversations and live camera assistance landed in May, Muse-powered image generation shipped across Meta AI, WhatsApp, and Instagram in July, and Muse Code arrived on August 5 as a terminal coding agent. The business connections carry the real weight, because an assistant reading a brand’s Instagram reach and ad campaign data has material a general chatbot never sees.

The permission question is what to watch next. Meta pulled its Instagram post image generator days after launching it in July, which shows how quickly a capture adjacent feature can be withdrawn once people use it in the open. A beta that reads window contents sits in the same territory. Businesses linking ad accounts should settle internal access rules before the app leaves 1.0 beta, and Mac users can treat the two macOS permission prompts as the real decision point.
