Meta launched a new iPhone app called Seller on July 24, 2026, giving Facebook Marketplace merchants dedicated listing, messaging, and inventory tools in one place. The company paired the release with “Facebook Verified,” a free, selfie-based identity badge for Marketplace profiles.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Meta released the Seller app for iPhone on July 24, 2026, giving Facebook Marketplace sellers one dedicated place to manage listings, messages, and sales.
  • The app, according to Meta, carries over a seller’s existing listings, messages, and sales history from their current Marketplace account, so nothing starts from zero.
  • Facebook Marketplace lists 430 million items each month worldwide, and Meta wants Seller to help it compete harder with eBay.
  • Meta AI now fills in a listing’s title, description, price, and category from uploaded photos, speeding up how sellers post items.
  • A new badge called “Facebook Verified” uses a simple selfie-based process to confirm a real person runs a profile, per Meta, addressing safety concerns on Marketplace.

What Happened?

Meta said it launched Seller on Friday as a standalone app built specifically for merchants who sell on Facebook Marketplace, where single purpose seller apps are becoming the norm. Seller is designed for iPhone, though it also runs on iPad and Mac.

The app syncs with a seller’s existing Marketplace account, carrying over current listings, buyer messages, and sales history rather than starting sellers over. A seller home dashboard, according to Meta, surfaces which items need shipping, which buyers need a reply, and which listings need a new price, next to a snapshot of recent sales performance.

Meta said Seller is now available on the App Store for U.S. users age 18 and older, with a web version currently being tested for people who already have the app.

Facebook Verified: What the Selfie Badge Actually Checks

Meta launched Facebook Verified as a free badge that signals a real person is behind a profile, using a simple selfie-based process where a short video selfie is checked against existing profile photos to confirm a match. In its own announcement, Meta was explicit about the badge’s limits: The Facebook Verified badge does not mean that Facebook endorses the user or guarantees their trustworthiness.

That distinction matters for Marketplace buyers. A selfie match confirms a human sits behind a device, not that a listing is honest. It helps reduce ghost profile fraud, not a scam from a verified account.

The badge arrives the same week Meta hands sellers a Meta AI tool that fills in a listing’s details from uploaded photos alone. Faster, AI-drafted listings lower the effort needed to post at scale, even as the badge raises the bar for who gets to post.

Meta’s Marketplace Push Against eBay

Facebook Marketplace started ten years ago after Meta saw rising shopping activity inside Facebook groups, and the platform now earns revenue from boosted listings. Meta is positioning Seller to better compete with e-commerce platforms like eBay, using its existing scale to pull sellers toward a dedicated tool instead of general marketplace browsing.

Seller is the second new iPhone app Meta introduced in a single week, following an AI-powered children’s story creation app called StoryKit that is running as a limited test in select markets. Splitting selling and AI storytelling into separate apps signals Meta unbundling AI and commerce features out of the main Facebook app.

Implications for Marketplace Sellers and Buyers

A standalone Seller app with an AI-assisted listing flow and a dedicated buyer inbox could pull casual, one-off Marketplace posters toward more consistent selling habits, the behavior shift e-commerce platforms typically chase when they build seller specific tools. Syncing existing listings, messages, and sales history into the new app removes the friction that usually stops sellers from adopting a parallel tool, since nothing has to be rebuilt.

The bigger test is whether Facebook Verified changes buyer behavior on a platform where anonymous listings have been the default. A badge only works as a trust signal if sellers opt in and buyers learn to look for it, and Meta has not said whether verification could move from optional to required.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

Pairing a dedicated selling app with an identity badge addresses two different problems with one release: sellers get a faster tool, and buyers get a signal that discourages the laziest fake profile scams. Meta’s own wording is the useful part: a verified badge signals a real person, not a trustworthy one.

Watch for whether Meta turns Facebook Verified from an optional badge into a requirement for high-volume sellers, and whether the web version of Seller, now in testing, reaches people who use Marketplace mostly through a browser. Meta has not published fraud numbers tied to the badge, so its real effect on Marketplace scams will only show up with time.
