Apple and Ford Motor Company announced on July 23, 2026 that Apple Maps will power navigation on Ford’s upcoming Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) Platform, arriving in 2027.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Apple and Ford will build Apple Maps directly into Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, arriving in 2027, according to Apple.
  • The deal runs on Apple’s new MapKit for Automotive SDK, the tool that, per Apple, lets automakers embed and customize Apple Maps.
  • Ford’s CEO says the new midsize EV will be priced around $30,000, calling it simple, useful, and attainable, per Ford.
  • Road-level Apple Maps data will also feed Ford’s Latitude AI team, supporting next-generation BlueCruise hands-free highway driving, per Ford.
  • Ford’s CEO says the automaker is honored to be among the first to embed Apple Maps directly into a vehicle.

Apple Maps Heads to Ford’s Electric Vehicles in 2027

Apple and Ford confirmed the partnership. It embeds Apple Maps directly into Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) Platform, the automaker’s next-generation EV architecture, and the integration arrives on Ford’s UEV lineup in 2027 through Apple’s new MapKit for Automotive SDK, per Apple.

Ford says drivers without an iPhone will still be able to use Apple Maps in these vehicles. CarPlay remains available too.

Apple has long tied its Maps experience to iPhone ownership through CarPlay. Losing that iPhone dependency cracks Apple’s usual hardware-led approach to Maps.

Technology is at its best when it feels simple, intuitive and genuinely useful. That’s the idea behind our new midsize electric vehicle, the first on our Universal Electric Vehicle Platform.

Inside the MapKit for Automotive SDK

Apple built MapKit for Automotive so any automaker can embed and customize Apple Maps directly into a vehicle’s own displays. CarPlay currently projects only from a connected iPhone; MapKit for Automotive does not need one. Apple Maps has delivered a world-class product, and we’re honored to be among the first to embed it directly into a vehicle, helping define intuitive, capable driving, said Jim Farley, CEO of Ford Motor Company.

Farley’s “among the first” phrasing signals more automaker deals are already in Apple’s pipeline. Apple’s press release separately notes the SDK “allows automakers to embed and customize Apple Maps,” language written for an open program, not a single exclusive partner.

Navigation Data Powers Ford’s Self-Driving Push

Road-level Apple Maps data will also feed Ford’s Latitude AI team as it builds next-generation BlueCruise, the automaker’s hands-free highway driving system. Apple says the goal is a more seamless on-ramp to off ramp experience. A navigation upgrade doubles as a driver-assistance input.

Ford is following a path other EV makers already committed capital to. Pair consumer mapping software with an in house driver assistance stack instead of licensing one.

Tesla is a prominent example, building Autopilot and Full Self-Driving with an engineering team figures rather than a licensed mapping partner. Ford is instead importing that layer from Apple, betting a strong consumer product can double as driver-assistance infrastructure it still owns.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

This deal reads as Apple choosing depth over reach for its native automaker integration ahead of the 2027 rollout. Rather than a broad licensing rollout, Apple is embedding Maps into one platform through a purpose-built SDK it can refine before opening the door wider.

Ford gains a navigation stack and a place-card search experience it does not have to build from scratch. It also gains a fresh data source for BlueCruise.

Farley’s “among the first” framing tells other automakers, and Apple’s own roadmap, that Ford is a template for the SDK, not a standalone exception.

What’s next: Ford has not named a launch vehicle. Nor has it confirmed the order in which model lines receive the feature, leaving the rollout timeline an open question. Ford’s Latitude AI team, Apple’s automotive partnerships group, and rival automakers evaluating MapKit for Automotive are the groups most likely to signal the next concrete milestone, whether that is a developer preview, a named launch vehicle, or another automaker deal.
