Apple has officially unveiled macOS 27 Golden Gate, introducing a redesigned Siri experience, deeper Apple Intelligence integration, and a complete transition away from Intel based Macs.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • macOS 27 Golden Gate was announced at WWDC 2026 as the next major Mac operating system.
  • Apple introduced a new Siri AI app, smarter search tools, Visual Intelligence, and AI-powered shortcuts.
  • The update officially ends support for Intel based Macs, making Apple Silicon a requirement.
  • Apple is also refining its controversial Liquid Glass design with new customization options and interface tweaks.

What Happened?

During its WWDC 2026 keynote, Apple revealed macOS 27 Golden Gate, the successor to macOS Tahoe 26. While much of the company’s presentation focused on platform wide improvements, Golden Gate brings a number of notable upgrades for Mac users, particularly in artificial intelligence, productivity, search, and interface design.

Apple said its latest operating system is built around three key priorities: platform improvements, trust and safety, and a major leap forward for Apple Intelligence.

WWDC 2026 wasn’t just about new features.

Apple also revealed which devices are making the jump to version 27.

A few takeaways:

• iOS 27 keeps support for the entire iPhone 11 lineup
• iPadOS 27 still supports iPad Pro models dating back to 2020
• macOS 27 is now Apple… pic.twitter.com/ApwMCy3X2Z

Siri AI Takes Center Stage

One of the biggest announcements was the debut of Siri AI, a significantly upgraded version of Apple’s digital assistant.

The new Siri arrives as a standalone application and is deeply integrated throughout macOS 27. Users can type requests directly into Spotlight, and the system will automatically recognize when a query should be handled by Siri AI.

Apple demonstrated how users can select multiple files and ask Siri to analyze them. In one example, Siri compared several PDF quotes for shed kits and generated a comparison table to help the user make a decision.

The assistant can also help write and proofread content across apps such as Mail and Messages. Apple says Siri AI supports more advanced actions through features such as personal context awareness, on screen understanding, and multi step app execution.

Search and Spotlight Get a Major Upgrade

Apple has rebuilt its search infrastructure from the ground up.

The new system can index content across a Mac much faster and make newly added information searchable almost immediately. Spotlight also gains deeper integration with Photos and Mail.

Users can ask Siri AI questions directly through Spotlight and even query the contents of multiple files simultaneously. According to Apple, the updated architecture was designed specifically for Apple Silicon, helping improve speed and efficiency.

Apple Intelligence Expands Across macOS

Apple Intelligence continues to be a major focus for the company.

With Visual Intelligence, users can capture information from screenshots and take action instantly. For example, a screenshot of an event schedule can be turned into calendar appointments. Users can also ask questions about products while browsing online stores.

Apple Intelligence can also create reminders and calendar events based on conversations or websites being viewed.

Another addition is Notify Me, a Safari feature that monitors changes on websites and alerts users when updates occur. Apple also showcased how AI could help automate tasks, including monitoring product releases.

AI-Powered Shortcuts and Safari Extensions

Apple is making automation more accessible to everyday users.

Instead of manually building workflows, users can simply describe what they want. Siri AI can then create custom Shortcuts automatically.

The same approach extends to Safari extensions. Users can describe an extension using natural language, and Apple Intelligence will generate it for them.

Apple believes these tools will help bring advanced automation features to users who may never have experimented with them before.

Liquid Glass Gets a Refinement

Following mixed reactions to the Liquid Glass redesign introduced with macOS Tahoe, Apple is making several adjustments.

Golden Gate introduces a global slider that allows users to adjust interface transparency levels, ranging from Ultra Clear to Tinted Glass. The company is also tightening window corner designs, restoring color to sidebar icons, and introducing a more consistent toolbar layout across applications.

Additional improvements include:

  • Higher resolution support for ultrawide displays, including 5K at 120Hz.
  • Pull to refresh gestures in apps such as Safari, Mail, News, and Calendar.
  • Easier event creation through natural language descriptions.
  • Context aware quick actions in Messages and Mail.
  • Seamless switching between audio and video podcasts in Apple Podcasts.

End of the Road for Intel Macs

Perhaps the most significant platform change is Apple’s decision to completely end support for Intel-based Macs.

Apple had previously indicated that macOS Tahoe 26 would be the final version supporting Intel hardware. With Golden Gate, Apple Silicon becomes a mandatory requirement.

The Intel models losing support include:

  • MacBook Pro 16 inch (2019)
  • MacBook Pro 13 inch (2020)
  • iMac 27 inch (2020)
  • Mac Pro (2019)

Apple says Intel processors lack the dedicated neural processing hardware needed to fully support the next generation of Apple Intelligence features. The company also benefits from simplifying software development by focusing entirely on Apple Silicon.

Existing Intel Mac owners will continue receiving security updates for macOS Tahoe through 2028.

Some of the most advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities in macOS 27 will require an M3 chip or newer with at least 12GB of memory, meaning certain lower end Apple Silicon devices will not support every AI feature.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think macOS 27 Golden Gate is less about visual changes and more about Apple’s long term AI strategy. The new Siri experience, smarter search capabilities, and Apple Intelligence features show that Apple wants AI to become part of everyday computing rather than a separate tool. At the same time, the company is finally closing the chapter on Intel Macs and fully committing to Apple Silicon. For Mac users, Golden Gate looks like one of Apple’s most important updates in years because it lays the foundation for how AI will work across the entire Apple ecosystem.
