OpenAI has rolled out a major Codex update that lets the AI coding assistant control desktop apps and handle more development tasks independently.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Codex can now control desktop apps by seeing, clicking, and typing on macOS.
  • New features include memory, image generation, and 90 plus plugins.
  • OpenAI is positioning Codex as a full developer workspace, not just a coding tool.
  • The update intensifies competition with Anthropic’s Claude Code.

What Happened?

OpenAI has introduced a major upgrade to Codex, expanding it from a coding assistant into a full development platform. The update adds desktop control, multi agent workflows, and deeper integrations with developer tools.

The rollout has started for Codex desktop users on macOS, with more regions and features expected soon.

Codex Moves Beyond Coding Into Full Workflow Control

OpenAI is clearly shifting Codex from a simple coding helper into a complete software development environment. The biggest highlight is its new computer use capability, which allows Codex to interact with desktop apps just like a human.

The system can now:

  • See, click, and type using its own cursor.
  • Operate apps in the background without interrupting users.
  • Run multiple AI agents in parallel on the same machine.

This means developers can assign different tasks to different agents at once. For example, one agent can test frontend changes while another checks backend performance or runs security tests. These agents work simultaneously without interfering with each other, making workflows faster and more efficient.

Built As an All In One Developer Workspace

The update brings several features that turn Codex into a central hub for development work rather than a tool used inside a terminal.

Key additions include:

  • In-app browser for testing and editing web apps directly.
  • Ability to comment on web pages to guide the AI.
  • Multiple terminal tabs and SSH access to remote environments.
  • Rich previews for files like PDFs, spreadsheets, and documents.

Codex also now supports over 90 new plugins, enabling integrations with tools like Slack, Gmail, and Notion. This allows developers to manage tasks across multiple platforms from a single interface.

Memory and Automation Make Codex More Autonomous

Another major upgrade is the introduction of persistent memory, allowing Codex to remember user preferences, past corrections, and project context.

This removes the need to repeat instructions and helps deliver better results over time. Codex can also:

  • Reuse past conversations to continue work.
  • Schedule tasks for the future and resume them automatically.
  • Suggest what to work on next based on context.

These features push Codex closer to becoming a long running autonomous agent rather than just a reactive assistant.

Image Generation and Visual Workflows Added

Codex now includes image generation, allowing developers to create UI mockups, product visuals, and game assets without leaving the workflow.

This is especially useful for frontend development, where visuals and code evolve together.

A Direct Challenge to Claude Code

This update is not happening in isolation. OpenAI is clearly targeting rivals like Anthropic’s Claude Code, which has been gaining attention for its ability to interact with software directly.

By adding desktop control and multi agent workflows, OpenAI is positioning Codex as a strong competitor in the agentic coding space. The move reflects a broader shift where AI tools are no longer just assisting developers but actively building and testing software.

Codex already has strong adoption, with millions of developers using it weekly, and this update is expected to accelerate growth further.

Rollout and Availability

The new features are currently rolling out to users of the Codex desktop app signed in with ChatGPT.

  • Computer use is initially limited to macOS.
  • Memory and personalization features are coming soon to Enterprise, Edu, and EU users.
  • Broader rollout is expected in the coming weeks.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

I think this is a major shift in how software gets built. Codex is no longer just helping write code, it is becoming a digital teammate that can actually execute tasks.

What stands out to me is the move toward all-in-one development environments. Developers no longer need to jump between tools. Codex is trying to bring everything into a single workflow, from writing code to testing and planning.

At the same time, competition is getting intense. With tools like Claude Code improving fast, developers may end up using multiple AI platforms depending on the task. Still, this update clearly shows that AI driven development is no longer the future, it is already here.
