Google has officially introduced Googlebook, a new AI focused laptop platform designed around Gemini Intelligence and Android technologies, marking the company’s biggest laptop shift since the launch of Chromebooks 15 years ago.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Googlebook is Google’s new AI powered laptop category focused on Gemini Intelligence.
  • The platform is built using Android technologies and premium hardware designs.
  • Features like Magic Pointer, custom AI widgets, and deep Android phone integration are coming to Googlebook.
  • Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo will launch the first Googlebook laptops later this year.

What Happened?

Google unveiled the new Googlebook platform during The Android Show ahead of Google I/O 2026. The company described it as a fresh approach to laptops built for an AI first era, with Gemini deeply integrated into the user experience.

Unlike Chromebooks, which focused heavily on web apps and cloud computing, Googlebook aims to deliver a more premium and intelligent computing experience powered by Android technologies and AI tools.

Googlebook Marks a Big Shift for Google

Google says the computing industry is moving from traditional operating systems toward what it calls an “intelligence system.” With Googlebook, the company wants Gemini AI to become the center of how people use their laptops.

Alexander Kuscher, Senior Director at Google leading Android tablets and laptops, said Googlebook laptops are “the first laptops designed from the ground up for Gemini Intelligence.”

While Google did not officially reveal the operating system behind Googlebook, reports suggest it could be connected to the long rumored Android and ChromeOS hybrid project internally known as Project Aluminum. Google itself avoided directly calling it Android, instead saying Android technologies are a major part of the experience.

Introducing Googlebook

Magic Pointer Could Become Googlebook’s Signature Feature

One of the biggest features announced is the new Magic Pointer, an AI powered cursor system developed with Google DeepMind.

Users can simply wiggle the cursor while hovering over content and Gemini will provide contextual suggestions instantly. For example:

  • Hover over a date in an email to create a calendar event.
  • Select two photos to merge or edit them using Gemini.
  • Interact with apps and files without manually opening multiple menus.

Google says the goal is to make AI feel more natural and integrated into everyday workflows instead of functioning like a separate chatbot.

Android Apps and Phone Features Come to the Desktop

Googlebook laptops will support Android apps through the Play Store, but Google says the experience will be far more advanced compared to Chromebooks.

Developers are now being encouraged to create desktop grade Android apps optimized specifically for Googlebook devices. According to Google, these apps will have deeper access to hardware and system features than Android apps currently have on ChromeOS.

Googlebook will also tightly integrate with Android phones. Users can continue working on apps from their phone directly on the laptop without downloading them again.

The new Quick Access feature will let users search, open, and transfer files from their Android phones directly through the Googlebook interface. Google says the system is designed to feel seamless across devices.

Premium Hardware and the New Glowbar Design

Unlike the affordable Chromebook strategy, Googlebook is clearly targeting the premium laptop market currently dominated by Apple MacBooks and Microsoft Copilot Plus PCs.

Google confirmed that Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are all preparing Googlebook laptops for release later this year. The company says devices will feature premium craftsmanship, lightweight designs, and support for both ARM and x86 processors.

A standout design element is the new Glowbar, a glowing multicolor LED strip placed on the laptop lid. Google says the Glowbar is not just cosmetic and will include additional functions and interactive features.

Teaser images also revealed a dedicated keyboard button featuring a “G” icon, although Google has not yet explained its exact functionality.

Chromebooks Are Not Going Away

Despite the launch of Googlebook, Google says Chromebooks will continue to exist, especially for schools, businesses, and budget focused users.

Kuscher said Google remains committed to Chromebook customers and confirmed that new Chromebook models and long term software support are still planned.

Googlebook instead appears positioned as a separate premium category focused heavily on AI experiences and tighter Android integration.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think Googlebook is Google’s most serious attempt yet to compete directly with the MacBook and next generation Windows AI laptops. Chromebooks succeeded in schools, but they never truly became premium devices people aspired to own.

This time, Google seems to understand that AI alone is not enough. The company is combining Gemini, Android, premium hardware, and cross device features into a single ecosystem experience. If Google can deliver smooth performance and strong app support, Googlebook could finally give Android users a real laptop alternative they actually want.
