Yelp turned on restaurant booking inside ChatGPT on Monday, letting people reserve a table or join a waitlist without leaving the chat window, the company said in a post written by Chad Richard, its senior vice president of business and corporate development. The feature covers thousands of restaurants across the United States and Canada.
The number Yelp put next to the launch is not a booking count. It is a trust score. Yelp’s Morning Consult survey of 2,202 US adults, fielded February 26 to 28 with a margin of error of about 2 points, found that 65% of Americans had used AI search in the prior six months and just 15% trusted it “a lot”. Another 72% said AI platforms should always show where information comes from, and 51% described AI results as a walled garden they cannot check.
That gap is the pitch. Richard wrote that 65% of respondents call the ability to take action on trusted platforms important when using AI for local discovery, which is Yelp’s argument for pushing a real reservation flow into the answer instead of leaving the model to describe one. Changes to a booking still go through Yelp afterward.

The commerce layer arrived quickly. Yelp licensed reviews, ratings, photos and business details to OpenAI in late July, on terms neither company disclosed and under an agreement that does not stop Yelp signing similar deals with other AI firms. “If you want to answer local queries, you really need Yelp,” chief executive Jeremy Stoppelman told Axios at the time. Content was the entry. A reservation is the part that touches money.
The announcement left plenty unstated. Yelp did not say how many restaurants “thousands” covers, whether OpenAI earns anything per cover, how ChatGPT decides between Yelp’s booking flow and any rival availability source, or what happens to a restaurant that takes reservations somewhere else. Yelp’s separate claim that it leads home services citations by 3.4x over its nearest competitor rests on a study by Foundation, not on OpenAI data.
Restaurants already running Yelp Guest Manager have one useful job today: open the dashboard and confirm that hours, table inventory and waitlist rules are accurate, because those fields now feed a surface that OpenAI put at 900 million weekly users in February, per SQ Magazine’s ChatGPT usage tracking. Stale availability used to cost a walk-in. It now costs an answer.
Yelp says its content and task features already run through Apple Maps, Amazon’s Alexa+, Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo. ChatGPT is the one where a user can finish the job in the same breath as asking, which is also where the assistant stops being a recommender and starts being a booking channel with agent-style task completion attached. Whether people accept that depends less on model quality than on the adoption and trust numbers Yelp just published against itself.
