SpaceX is making one of its biggest moves beyond space by acquiring AI coding startup Cursor in a deal valued at $60 billion.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • SpaceX has agreed to acquire Anysphere, the company behind AI coding assistant Cursor, for $60 billion.
  • The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approval.
  • Cursor has emerged as one of the fastest growing AI software companies and helped popularize the vibe coding trend.
  • The acquisition strengthens SpaceX’s growing presence in the artificial intelligence market through its connection with xAI.

What Happened?

SpaceX announced plans to acquire Anysphere, the startup behind the AI coding platform Cursor, in a stock based transaction valued at $60 billion. The deal comes just days after SpaceX completed its highly anticipated Nasdaq debut, which valued the company at more than $2 trillion.

Once the transaction closes, Cursor will become a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX, bringing advanced AI-powered coding tools into the company’s expanding technology portfolio.

SpaceX Pushes Further Into Artificial Intelligence

The acquisition marks a major step in SpaceX’s efforts to expand beyond rockets, satellites, and space technology. While the company is best known for transforming the commercial space industry, it is now positioning itself as a serious player in the rapidly growing AI sector.

SpaceX had already shown interest in Cursor earlier this year. In April, the company secured an option that allowed it to either acquire the startup for $60 billion or pursue a separate partnership arrangement. The acquisition confirms that SpaceX sees long term value in owning the technology outright.

The move could also strengthen the position of xAI, the artificial intelligence company behind the Grok chatbot. SpaceX merged with xAI in February, creating opportunities to combine AI research, computing resources, and software development under a broader technology ecosystem.

Why Cursor Matters?

Founded in 2022, Cursor quickly became one of Silicon Valley’s most talked about AI startups. The platform enables developers to generate, edit, and improve software code using artificial intelligence.

Cursor gained widespread attention for helping popularize a trend known as vibe coding, where developers rely on AI systems to generate significant portions of software with minimal manual coding.

The company has experienced remarkable growth in a short period of time. According to previously reported company data, Cursor has reached approximately $2.6 billion in annualized business to business revenue, with enterprise adoption accelerating rapidly.

Its success has attracted support from major investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive Capital, Nvidia, and Google. Earlier reports suggested the company was exploring funding discussions that could have valued it at around $50 billion.

Deal Structure and Financial Details

The acquisition will be completed through a stock-based merger involving X67, a wholly owned SpaceX subsidiary. The structure indicates that funds raised through SpaceX’s recent public offering are not being used directly to finance the transaction.

The agreement includes significant protections for both parties. If the deal is terminated under certain conditions, SpaceX could be required to pay a $10 billion termination fee. The filing also includes a separate $4 billion regulatory termination fee if antitrust related issues prevent the transaction from closing.

Market Responds Positively

Investors appeared to welcome the acquisition announcement. SpaceX shares surged in premarket trading following the news, adding hundreds of billions of dollars in market value.

The stock also recorded strong gains after the announcement, reflecting investor confidence that artificial intelligence could become a meaningful growth driver for the company.

Questions remain about how the deal could affect SpaceX’s existing cloud computing arrangements. The company recently signed agreements with Anthropic and Google to lease substantial data center capacity. Those contracts reportedly include termination provisions that could allow SpaceX to reclaim computing resources if needed for its expanding AI ambitions.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think this deal shows that SpaceX is no longer content with leading only in space technology. By acquiring Cursor, the company is placing a massive bet on the future of AI-powered software development.

Cursor already has strong momentum, growing enterprise adoption, and a recognizable brand among developers. If SpaceX successfully combines Cursor’s coding technology with xAI’s artificial intelligence capabilities and its own computing infrastructure, this acquisition could become one of the most important AI deals of 2026.
