One of the most influential minds behind modern AI is leaving Google to join OpenAI, giving the ChatGPT maker a major talent boost as it prepares for a potential public market debut.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Noam Shazeer, Google’s Vice President of Engineering and Gemini co-lead, is leaving the company to join OpenAI.
  • Shazeer played a key role in the development of Gemini and co-authored the landmark 2017 research paper that helped spark the AI boom.
  • His move highlights the fierce competition among leading AI companies for top talent.
  • The appointment comes as OpenAI moves closer to an anticipated IPO.

What Happened?

Google Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer announced on Wednesday that he is leaving Google and joining OpenAI. The move marks one of the most notable talent shifts in the AI industry this year and comes at a time when major technology companies are aggressively competing for the world’s top researchers and engineers.

Shazeer confirmed the decision in a post on X, calling it a difficult choice while expressing excitement about his next chapter at OpenAI.

I’m excited to share that I’ll be joining OpenAI and look forward to working with the exceptional team there.

It was a difficult decision to move on. I’m incredibly proud of the amazing team at Google and everything we’ve built together. It has been an honor and a pleasure to…

— Noam Shazeer (@NoamShazeer) June 18, 2026

A Major Win for OpenAI

The arrival of Shazeer is a significant gain for OpenAI, which has emerged as one of the leading forces in artificial intelligence through the success of ChatGPT. The company recently confidentially filed for an initial public offering, making every major leadership addition closely watched by investors and the broader technology industry.

Shazeer wrote:

“

I’m excited to share that I’ll be joining OpenAI and look forward to working with the exceptional team there.

Noam Shazeer

His announcement quickly drew attention across the AI community, including from OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman, who welcomed the move.

Altman replied:

noam is one of the people I have most wanted to work with since the very beginning of openai.

only took 10 years.

i think it will be worth the wait! https://t.co/Hj2fjCywjv

For OpenAI, bringing in a researcher of Shazeer’s stature strengthens an already impressive roster of AI talent and could further boost confidence as the company moves toward its next phase of growth.

The Architect Behind Modern AI

Shazeer is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in artificial intelligence. He joined Google in 2000 and was among the company’s first 100 employees.

His contributions extend far beyond Gemini. Shazeer was a co-author of the groundbreaking 2017 research paper that introduced concepts that became the foundation for today’s large language models. Many experts consider that research a turning point that accelerated the development of systems such as ChatGPT and Gemini.

His work earned widespread recognition across the industry, including being named among the most influential people in AI.

Before his professional career, Shazeer also built an impressive academic record. He studied mathematics and computer science at Duke University and gained attention as a teenager when he represented the United States at the International Mathematical Olympiad, winning a gold medal with a perfect score.

From Google Exit to Character.AI and Back

This is not the first time Shazeer has left Google.

In 2021, he departed after disagreements over the company’s approach to releasing advanced chatbot technology. Along with fellow researcher Daniel De Freitas, he had worked on a conversational AI project known as Meena, which later evolved into LaMDA.

After leaving Google, the pair founded Character.AI, which quickly became one of the most prominent AI startups in the industry.

Google later brought Shazeer and De Freitas back in 2024 through a deal reportedly worth $2.7 billion, integrating them into its DeepMind division. Shazeer subsequently became a co-lead of the Gemini AI program and was credited with helping Google narrow the gap with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Growing Battle for AI Talent

Shazeer’s departure underscores the escalating fight for elite AI talent.

Technology companies are increasingly willing to spend billions of dollars to recruit top researchers and executives who can help develop the next generation of AI systems. Recent industry moves have shown that access to talent has become just as important as access to computing power and data.

Google recently showcased new products including Gemini 3.5 Flash and the Gemini Spark AI agent at its annual I/O conference, making the loss of one of its most prominent AI leaders particularly notable.

Google acknowledged Shazeer’s contributions in a statement, saying it was grateful for his meaningful work at the company over the years.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I see this as more than just another executive move. Noam Shazeer is one of the people who helped shape the technology behind today’s AI revolution. When someone with that level of influence switches sides, it sends a strong message about where the industry is heading. For OpenAI, this is a major strategic win ahead of its expected IPO. For Google, it is a reminder that the battle for AI leadership is increasingly becoming a battle for people as much as technology.
