OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hit the panic button, urging an all-hands push to upgrade ChatGPT as competition from Google and Anthropic heats up.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • OpenAI declared a “code red” to improve ChatGPT’s performance amid rising competition.
  • Altman delayed other product initiatives including ads and AI agents.
  • Google’s Gemini 3 is outperforming rivals in benchmarks and gaining user traction.
  • A new ChatGPT reasoning model will be released next week.

What Happened?

OpenAI is shifting gears in response to fierce pressure from Google’s Gemini 3 and other AI competitors. CEO Sam Altman issued a “code red” memo, calling for immediate improvements to ChatGPT and postponing other product rollouts. This marks a crucial moment for the company as it works to maintain its lead in the rapidly evolving AI space.

OpenAI Halts Features to Refocus on ChatGPT Quality

In a memo seen by The Wall Street Journal and The Information, Altman outlined a dramatic shift in priorities. OpenAI is postponing new features like advertising, AI agents for shopping and health, and its planned personal assistant, Pulse. Instead, the company will dedicate its focus to enhancing ChatGPT’s core experience.

Key areas of improvement include:

  • Faster and more reliable performance.
  • Better personalization for users.
  • Expanded ability to answer a wider range of questions.

To speed up the process, OpenAI will hold daily calls with teams working on ChatGPT and encourage temporary team transfers to concentrate resources on these upgrades.

Google’s Gemini 3 Raises the Stakes

This renewed urgency follows the release of Google’s Gemini 3, which has reportedly outperformed OpenAI’s models on several industry benchmarks. Gemini’s momentum is visible in its user growth, rising from 450 million in July to 650 million in October. Google’s creative tools, such as the Nano Banana image generator, are gaining popularity and putting more pressure on OpenAI’s ecosystem.

In fact, Gemini 3 Pro and the updated Nano Banana Pro have set a new bar for generative AI performance. Meanwhile, Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.5 has also emerged as a strong rival, raising the stakes across the industry.

OpenAI’s Profit Puzzle and the Push for Scale

Despite having over 800 million monthly users, OpenAI is not yet profitable. A large chunk of its user base is on the free tier, leaving the company heavily reliant on future monetization strategies. According to internal estimates, OpenAI may need to grow its revenue to $200 billion by 2030 just to break even. The recent chatter around showing ads in the ChatGPT free tier is now on hold, signaling a short-term pivot toward model performance rather than monetization.

A New Reasoning Model Is Coming

As part of the code red initiative, OpenAI is set to release a new ChatGPT reasoning model next week, which is expected to outperform Gemini 3. Improvements to its image generation capabilities are also in the pipeline, though no timeline has been confirmed.

OpenAI has a color-coded system for internal alerts. The company had previously issued a “code orange” for upgrades to ChatGPT. Altman’s latest memo has raised the level to “code red,” a move that underscores just how serious the situation has become.

On X (formerly Twitter), Nick Turley, OpenAI’s head of ChatGPT, shared that the company’s goal is to “keep making ChatGPT more capable, continue growing, and expand access around the world – while making it feel even more intuitive and personal.”

Three years ago, we released ChatGPT as a public research preview at a time when similar AI systems mostly lived inside large companies. We did it because we believed anyone should be able to use advanced AI, not just a select few.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

I think this moment is a big reality check for OpenAI. For a while, it looked like ChatGPT had a clear lead, but now with Google’s Gemini 3 catching up fast, the pressure is real. I like that OpenAI is prioritizing quality over flashy features. Cutting distractions like ads and focusing on making ChatGPT faster and smarter shows they’re serious. But the competition isn’t slowing down either, and it’s clear we’re entering the next phase of the AI race. As users, we can expect smarter, more responsive chatbots very soon and that’s exciting.
