OpenAI is bringing targeted advertising to ChatGPT in Japan, marking a major step in the company’s effort to turn its fast growing AI platform into a sustainable business.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • OpenAI will begin showing ads to ChatGPT users in Japan.
  • Advertisements will be matched to users’ interests and conversation topics.
  • Japanese firms Dentsu Digital, Hakuhodo DY ONE, and CyberAgent will help manage ad placement.
  • The move highlights OpenAI’s growing push to monetize ChatGPT while competing with Google and Amazon in AI powered advertising.

What Happened?

OpenAI is preparing to roll out targeted advertising within ChatGPT for users in Japan. The new ad format will place sponsored content directly inside conversations, allowing advertisements to appear alongside AI-generated responses based on users’ interests and discussion topics.

The initiative represents one of OpenAI’s biggest commercialization efforts outside the United States and reflects the growing importance of generative AI as a new gateway for search, product discovery, and online recommendations.

OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Advertising Into Japan

Under the new system, advertisements will be embedded into ChatGPT conversations rather than appearing as traditional banner ads. OpenAI plans to use users’ conversation history and active discussion topics to determine which products or services may be most relevant.

The company says advertising selections will not rely on sensitive personal information such as health related data. Political advertising and content that falls under government regulated categories will also be excluded from the program.

The ads will be available to users of ChatGPT’s Free tier as well as the company’s low cost Go subscription plan.

According to sources familiar with the initiative, advertising rates in Japan are expected to be around 5,000 yen per 1,000 impressions, giving brands a new way to reach consumers through AI-powered conversations.

Japanese Advertising Giants Join the Initiative

OpenAI is partnering with several major advertising groups in Japan to support the rollout.

The companies involved include Dentsu Digital, a subsidiary of the Dentsu Group, Hakuhodo DY ONE, part of Hakuhodo DY Holdings, and CyberAgent. These firms will serve as intermediaries responsible for advertising procurement, placement, and operational support.

By working with established advertising agencies, OpenAI can quickly connect brands with ChatGPT’s growing user base while adapting the platform to local market needs.

The partnership also signals growing confidence among advertisers that conversational AI could become an important marketing channel in the coming years.

A Growing Revenue Opportunity for OpenAI

Japan is not OpenAI’s first experiment with advertising.

The company introduced a trial advertising service in the United States earlier this year. Several well known brands, including Target, Adobe, and Mazda Motor, participated in the initial testing phase.

According to reports, OpenAI’s advertising business generated more than $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks through March, highlighting the significant financial potential of the model.

Research from analytics firm Sensor Tower found that business software advertisements, furniture products, and household goods were among the most common ad categories appearing within ChatGPT. The platform is particularly attractive to advertisers because it can reach users who are actively researching products and comparing purchasing options.

AI Advertising Competition Intensifies

OpenAI’s move comes as other technology companies race to integrate advertising into AI-powered experiences.

Google recently announced plans to introduce advertising into its conversational search experience known as AI Mode. The company intends to generate product descriptions and recommendation explanations based on user interactions.

Amazon has also expanded advertising capabilities within its AI shopping assistant. The feature provides users with sponsored product explanations and additional promotional content during shopping journeys.

The growing competition suggests that AI chat interfaces may become the next major battleground for digital advertising, potentially reshaping how consumers discover products online.

OpenAI has already expanded its ad supported offering to countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The company announced in May that Japan and South Korea would be among the next markets to receive the service.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think this is one of the clearest signs yet that AI companies are moving beyond subscriptions and looking for long term advertising revenue. ChatGPT is becoming more than just a chatbot. It is evolving into a platform where users search, compare products, and make decisions. That makes it incredibly valuable to advertisers.

What stands out is that OpenAI is trying to balance monetization with privacy protections by excluding sensitive personal data and political advertising. If users accept ads inside conversations, this could become a major new revenue engine not only for OpenAI but for the entire generative AI industry.
