OpenAI said on August 31, 2026 that ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days, and opened self-serve buying across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

The Big Picture

  • OpenAI reported a $1 billion annualized run rate for ChatGPT Ads, reached in fewer than 200 days since launch.
  • Self-serve ad buying opens across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa through the Ads Manager tool.
  • ChatGPT ads now run in more than 40 countries, supported by over 50 technology and measurement partners.
  • The ad-supported free tier serves the more than 1 billion people who use ChatGPT every week.
  • Ad personalization can draw on a user’s wider ChatGPT history in some countries, depending on their settings.

OpenAI opens self-serve ad buying to four more regions

Advertisers in those markets can now buy ChatGPT placements directly through Ads Manager, without going through the OpenAI Ads Solutions team or an agency partner. The company said in its announcement that ads run in more than 40 countries and that its partner ecosystem has grown past 50 technology and measurement firms.

The platform started as a managed sales operation aimed at large agencies and brands. Ads Manager arrived in May and pulled in small and medium-sized businesses, which OpenAI now calls a material share of the business without attaching a number to it. Advertisers outside the United States account for a growing share of revenue, the company said, and it did not break that out either.

Buying has also moved past simple impression deals. CPC and outcome-optimized bidding account for the majority of campaigns, while OpenAI’s Pixel and Conversions API carry measurement. Product feeds, platform and geographic targeting and custom audiences fill out a toolkit that now looks close to what a buyer expects from an established network, which matters more as ChatGPT pushes further into commerce.

What the run rate does and does not show?

An annualized run rate takes current monthly revenue and multiplies it across twelve months, so $1 billion describes the pace of the most recent period projected forward. It is not money the ad business has earned since testing began in February.

Two performance numbers came with the announcement and neither names its source. OpenAI cited an ecommerce advertiser that hit 3x return on ad spend over 28 days, and a technology partner reporting that more than 80% of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers.

Both are single unnamed cases, so they show what is achievable without establishing a benchmark, and the wider picture of OpenAI’s revenue mix stays partly obscured.

Four questions went unanswered:

  • What share of ad revenue comes from small and medium-sized businesses?
  • How many of the “tens of thousands” of advertisers run campaigns in a given month?
  • Which of the 40 or so countries actually carry the revenue?
  • How ad load on the free tier compares with the paid ChatGPT Go tier?

Ad targeting reaches past the current conversation

OpenAI’s ads system selects a placement from the context of the conversation a person is having. Depending on the country and a user’s settings, it may also use context from that person’s broader ChatGPT experience, which means an ad can reflect interests raised in earlier, unrelated sessions.

That is the part most free-tier users will not have registered. OpenAI’s advertising principles state that conversations stay private from advertisers, that the company does not sell user data to advertisers, and that ads carry labels separating them from ChatGPT’s answers. “Protecting the trust people place in ChatGPT remains our North Star,” the company wrote. Personalization still runs by default in the markets where it applies.

Anyone on the free tier or ChatGPT Go can open their data controls, switch off ad personalization, and clear the data already used for ads. Doing that narrows what the system draws on and helps reduce unwanted profiling. It does not remove ads, which are how OpenAI keeps the app open to more than 1 billion weekly users.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

A run rate this size says less about ad quality than about where the inventory sits. ChatGPT catches people while a decision is still forming, when they are working out which software to buy or which contractor to call, and an ad served at that moment competes with search results instead of display banners. That is why buyers moved to CPC and outcome bidding so fast, and why Google’s ad economics remain the comparison worth tracking.

What’s next: OpenAI has said more markets, formats, objectives and buying options are coming, along with “new ways for businesses to interact with consumers in more native ways in ChatGPT.” Native placements are the line to watch. An ad that reads as part of the conversation is harder to label clearly than one sitting beside the answer, and the trust measures OpenAI says it tracks will be tested there first.
