Anthropic updated Claude’s voice mode on Thursday, July 23, 2026, letting users pick between Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models instead of the Haiku-only mode that shipped last year. The switch follows OpenAI’s own conversational-model update to ChatGPT’s voice mode weeks earlier.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Anthropic expanded Claude’s voice mode, letting users choose Opus, Sonnet, or Haiku instead of the Haiku-only mode it launched last year.
  • Voice mode now opens, per Anthropic, with whichever model a person last used in text chat, automatically applying that model’s newest generation.
  • Free plan users get Haiku and one connected app, while paid plans unlock Opus, Sonnet, and every connected tool.
  • Claude’s voice mode can reach into connected Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Slack accounts, and it saves spoken conversations as transcripts in chat history.
  • Anthropic made no changes to voice mode’s underlying voice stack in this release, so users may not see conversational improvements like better interruption handling, per Anthropic’s own account of the update.

What Happened?

Claude’s voice mode changed in four ways this release, according to Anthropic: which models are available, how far connected apps can reach, what free-plan users get compared with paid, and what stayed unchanged.

Voice mode launched last year running on Haiku alone, the model Anthropic chose for speed, which kept conversations quick but not always deep. That ceiling is gone now, per Anthropic’s own support documentation, which states it starts with the model you last used in text chat (for example, Sonnet, Opus, Haiku) and will automatically switch to the latest generation of that model. The range matters because an AI model comparison between Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku already shows a wide gap in reasoning depth, not just speed.

A model picker inside a live conversation lets a caller switch models mid-call. Anthropic says the added reasoning power suits practicing for an important pitch meeting, deciding between multiple offers, or talking through a half-formed idea out loud.

Voice mode now runs on Claude’s more capable models and reaches the tools you’ve connected mid-conversation.

Connected Tools Widen the Access Surface

Claude’s voice mode can act on connected Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Slack accounts the same way text chat does, following whatever plan-level permissions the account already has. The rollout adds Canva and Notion to that reach, so a spoken request can update a meeting slot, draft an email, or create a document in Notion without the user typing a word.

That is a wider blast radius for a channel meant to be used hands-free. A spoken command that can touch email, calendars, and shared documents raises the stakes of a misheard instruction, background noise, or someone else’s voice reaching an unlocked device.

Anthropic says Claude will ask for permission before using a connected tool, and the Free plan is capped at one connected app versus every tool on paid plans, which helps reduce the exposure on a shared or lower-trust device. Anthropic also confirmed voice mode is not available inside Claude Cowork or Claude Code, so this connected tool reach does not extend into those developer-facing products.

Textual transcripts of every voice conversation are saved to chat history the same way a typed conversation would be. That retention detail matters before an employee dictates something sensitive out loud in an open office, since a spoken request to read an email or discuss a calendar entry leaves the same written record a typed chat would. Enterprise teams tracking Shadow AI usage against sanctioned tool access should treat voice mode’s connected app permissions the same way they treat text chat’s.

Implications for AI Voice Assistants

The comparison to OpenAI is the more interesting story here. TechCrunch’s report notes this is a marked difference from OpenAI’s own voice update, which changed conversational style but still cannot use outside tools to complete tasks.

Anthropic picked the opposite tradeoff: richer models and deeper tool access, but no stated change to the voice stack itself, meaning interruption handling stays as it was before this release. Neither company has shipped an assistant that pairs a genuinely conversational voice stack with broad connected-tool access.

A more capable Opus or Sonnet driven Claude voice session can plan, draft, and act across a person’s inbox and calendar, but it still talks the way it did last year. An assistant that can safely act on real accounts needs both a smart model and a voice layer that reliably tells a real instruction from a stray word, and this release only builds half of that.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

This July 2026 release sharpens the reasoning inside Claude’s voice mode while leaving the surrounding safeguards exactly where they stood before. Choosing Opus or Sonnet in voice mode gives callers the same reasoning power they already get from text chat, and that is a real capability jump for tasks like pitch rehearsal or drafting a document by voice.

Every one of those conversations still runs through the same connected app permissions and transcript retention that text chat uses, just triggered by speech instead of typing. Anthropic’s own account of the release confirms the voice recognition and interruption handling underneath were left untouched.

What comes next depends on how the surrounding controls hold up as more people talk to Claude instead of typing to it. Anyone connecting Gmail, Calendar, or Slack to voice mode should treat the spoken channel with the same account hygiene as text chat, since a saved transcript and a live tool connection follow the same rules either way. Anthropic has not detailed additional voice specific safeguards for this release, so the practical safety improvement available now comes from choosing a paid plan’s tighter connected app limits over the free tier’s single app cap.
