Amazon is quietly working on a new smartphone powered by Alexa and artificial intelligence, marking a potential return to a market it exited over a decade ago.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Amazon is developing a new smartphone codenamed Transformer with a strong AI focus.
  • Alexa will play a central role, enhanced with new generative AI features.
  • The device may move away from traditional app stores and rely on AI driven experiences.
  • No confirmed launch timeline or pricing, and the project could still be scrapped.

What Happened?

Amazon is reportedly building a new smartphone under the codename Transformer, aiming to revive its mobile ambitions years after the Fire Phone failed. The device is expected to focus heavily on Alexa and artificial intelligence, with development still ongoing and details limited.

BREAKING: Amazon is reportedly planning a smartphone comeback more than a decade after its Fire Phone flop, per Reuters

• Project codenamed “Transformer”
• Focus on AI, Alexa, and deep personalization

Amazon’s Second Shot at Smartphones

Amazon’s earlier attempt in the smartphone space did not go as planned. The Fire Phone, launched in 2014 under Jeff Bezos’ leadership, failed to gain traction and was discontinued within a year. Now, the company appears ready to try again, but this time with a very different strategy.

The new device, internally called Transformer, is being developed within Amazon’s Devices and Services division. A specialized team known as ZeroOne is leading the project, headed by J Allard, a former Microsoft executive known for his work on Xbox and Zune.

Unlike the Fire Phone, which struggled with app availability and differentiation, this new effort is being built around artificial intelligence as the core experience.

Alexa Moves to the Center of the Experience

A key shift in Amazon’s approach is placing Alexa at the heart of the smartphone. The assistant has recently been upgraded with generative AI capabilities, allowing it to perform more advanced tasks such as:

  • Planning trips and managing calendars
  • Recommending content like movies and music
  • Assisting with homework and research
  • Saving and organizing recipes

The smartphone is expected to act as a personalized hub that connects users with Amazon’s ecosystem throughout the day. This includes services like Amazon Shopping, Prime Video, and Prime Music, all integrated more deeply into the device experience.

Internally, the phone is seen as a way to boost adoption of Amazon’s AI tools and make them more accessible in everyday life.

A Different Approach to Apps

One of the most interesting aspects of the Transformer project is its potential departure from traditional app stores. Instead of relying on downloadable apps, Amazon is reportedly exploring AI driven mini apps or lightweight services, similar to what users see in modern AI platforms.

This could solve one of the biggest issues that plagued the Fire Phone, which struggled due to a lack of strong app support. By focusing on AI powered interactions instead of app downloads, Amazon may be trying to redefine how users interact with smartphones.

The company has also explored different design ideas, including minimalist phone concepts inspired by devices like the Light Phone, which strips away distractions and focuses on essential functions.

Big AI Push Driving the Strategy

Amazon’s renewed interest in smartphones comes at a time when the company is investing heavily in artificial intelligence. It has committed billions toward AI infrastructure, chips, and robotics, and has been working to strengthen its position against competitors.

Alexa itself has gone through a major overhaul, emerging as a more capable AI assistant. The new smartphone could serve as a direct channel to bring these AI capabilities into users’ daily routines.

At the same time, the broader tech industry is moving toward AI first devices. Companies are experimenting with AI powered gadgets beyond smartphones, including wearables and smart assistants, although not all have succeeded.

Uncertain Future and Open Questions

Despite the ambition behind the Transformer project, many details remain unclear:

  • No confirmed launch date.
  • Unknown pricing strategy.
  • Unclear revenue expectations.
  • Possibility that the project may still be canceled.

Sources familiar with the matter suggest that the device is still in development and could change direction depending on market conditions or internal priorities.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

I see this as a bold but risky move from Amazon. The company clearly learned from the Fire Phone failure and is now betting everything on AI instead of apps. That feels like the right direction, but it is also a tough one. Smartphones are already dominated by Apple and Samsung, and changing how people use apps is not easy.

What makes this interesting to me is Alexa’s transformation. If Amazon truly delivers a smart, helpful AI experience that works seamlessly across shopping, entertainment, and daily tasks, this phone could stand out. But if the AI feels gimmicky or incomplete, it could end up like many other failed AI devices we have seen recently.
