Apple confirmed on August 26 that its next product launch event will take place September 9 at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. The keynote lands eight days after John Ternus takes over as chief executive from Tim Cook.

Key Takeaways

  • Apple set September 9 at 10 a.m. PDT for its fall keynote at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California.
  • John Ternus becomes chief executive on September 1, which makes this his first product event in the top job.
  • Apple’s media invitations carry the tagline “Surprise and Shine” beside a glowing Apple logo and went out on August 26.
  • Rumors point to a foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, none of which Apple has confirmed.
  • Apple Watch Series 12, a new Apple Watch Ultra, and smart home devices are also expected on stage.

What We Know?

Apple published the date on its Apple Events page and sent invitations to media carrying the line “Surprise and Shine” next to a glowing Apple logo. The keynote begins at 10 a.m. PDT, 1 p.m. EDT, and streams on Apple’s website, the Apple TV app, and YouTube.

Ternus ran hardware engineering as senior vice president before the promotion and is expected to lead the presentation at the Apple Park campus. The invitation names no presenter and no product, which leaves the tagline as the only hint Apple has offered about what is coming.

The expected hardware slate covers the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the Apple Watch Series 12, a refreshed Apple Watch Ultra, and new smart home devices. Apple may also set public release dates for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate.

What We Don’t Know?

Apple named no product in the invitation. The tagline and the timing are the only firm details, which leaves an unusually wide gap between what the company has said and what the rumor cycle expects.

Four questions carry the most weight:

  • Whether a foldable iPhone appears at all, and whether Apple brands it iPhone Ultra as long-running rumors suggest?
  • How far prices move. Memory supply constraints have fed speculation about increases, and Apple has addressed neither?
  • When the standard iPhone 18 ships. According to MacRumors, Apple is skipping it this year and holding it for a spring 2027 slot alongside more affordable models?
  • What the smart home lineup includes. A new home hub, a refreshed HomePod mini, and an updated Apple TV have each been floated?

The invitation proves a date, a time, a venue, and a tagline. It proves nothing about the hardware, and Apple has not commented on any of the leaked product names.

Ternus Inherits the Year’s Biggest Launch

Ternus takes the stage with a hardware engineer’s record and a product cycle he helped build. Rumors describe the Pro models as iterative upgrades on a familiar design, which concentrates the event’s risk in one product. A folding iPhone would be Apple’s first major form-factor change since the iPhone X in 2017.

The calendar split matters as much as the specs. Moving the standard model to that spring slot would give Apple two iPhone moments a year and leave the September stage to the Pro tier and whatever new shape arrives beside it. For much of the iPhone user base, that could mean waiting until spring for the cheapest new model.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

The setup reads as a low drama handoff. Apple kept its usual fall slot, its usual venue, and its usual tagline game, and it handed Ternus a stage he already knows from the hardware side. The foldable is the one variable, and a form factor debut is a strange thing to give a new chief executive in his second week.

Apple’s own timeline runs short from here. Pre-orders typically open within days of a keynote, with devices reaching buyers about a week later, though the company confirms those dates only on stage. Anyone who bought an iPhone or Apple Watch in the past few days should check the return window on that purchase against September 9, because a device bought now may still be returnable when the new lineup is announced.
