YouTube is testing a new AI search tool called Ask YouTube that gives users conversational answers with a mix of text, Shorts, longform videos, and relevant video sections.

Quick Summary

  • YouTube is testing Ask YouTube, an AI search feature that works more like a chatbot inside search.
  • The feature can show text summaries, Shorts, full videos, video segments, titles, and channel details.
  • It is currently available as an experiment for YouTube Premium users in the United States who are 18 or older.
  • Users can ask follow up questions, but early tests show that some answers may still be limited or inaccurate.

What Happened?

Google has started testing a new AI-powered search experience for YouTube called Ask YouTube. The feature is designed to make YouTube search feel more conversational by allowing users to ask detailed questions and receive guided answers instead of only a list of videos.

The experiment is currently available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States who are 18 or older. Google says the feature can return a combination of text, longform videos, YouTube Shorts, and relevant video segments based on what the user is searching for.

YouTube Search Is Becoming More Conversational

YouTube is no longer just testing search as a simple keyword box. With Ask YouTube, Google is trying to turn video search into an interactive assistant that can understand broader questions and give more useful results.

Google describes the test as “a new way to search on YouTube that feels more like a conversation,” and that is exactly the direction the company appears to be moving in. Instead of typing a basic search term and scrolling through videos, users can ask questions in a more natural way.

For example, a user could ask for a short history of the Apollo 11 moon landing, a summary of volleyball rules, funny baby elephant clips, or travel planning help. YouTube can then generate a text-based answer and place related videos around that answer.

How Ask YouTube Works?

Once the experiment is enabled, users see an Ask YouTube button in the search bar. When they click on it, YouTube may show suggested prompts or allow them to type their own question.

In early testing, a query about the Apollo 11 moon landing produced a short summary of the mission along with key milestones, including the lunar landing date and Neil Armstrong’s first step on the Moon. YouTube also showed a related video with a timestamped section, plus collections of videos and Shorts grouped around different parts of the mission.

The feature can also help with practical searches. One example mentioned in the reports is planning a 3 day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. Instead of only showing travel videos, Ask YouTube can return text guidance, short videos, longer videos, and relevant video moments.

Follow Up Questions Are Part Of The Test

One of the more important parts of Ask YouTube is the ability to ask follow-up questions. After getting an answer, users can continue the search with more specific questions, such as asking where to find good coffee during a trip.

This makes the tool closer to Google’s broader AI Mode search experience, where users can ask multi part questions and continue refining the results. Google has been adding AI search features across its products, including web browsing help, product price exploration, and Gemini related tools.

Results May Still Need Improvement

While Ask YouTube could make search more useful, the early test also shows that the feature is not perfect yet. Some searches may still return a more traditional list of videos instead of a rich AI answer.

There are also concerns around accuracy. One early test reportedly produced factually incorrect information for a query related to a Steam Controller. That is an important reminder that AI-generated answers still need careful checking, especially when users are looking for precise facts.

YouTube users have also been vocal about low quality AI-generated content on the platform. Because of that, Ask YouTube will likely be judged by whether it helps people find better videos faster, not just whether it adds more AI to the search page.

Google Could Expand Ask YouTube Later

For now, Ask YouTube is limited to Premium users in the United States, but Google has said it is working to make the feature available to non Premium users as well.

The feature could also open the door for new discovery formats on YouTube. Since it combines text, videos, Shorts, and specific video segments, it may help smaller creators appear in more useful contexts. It could also give Google more room to experiment with future sponsored placements, although that is not part of the current test details.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think Ask YouTube could become one of YouTube’s most useful search upgrades if Google keeps quality at the center. People already use YouTube for recipes, travel ideas, learning, product research, and quick explanations. A conversational search tool could save time by pulling the right video moments instead of forcing users to open several videos one by one.

But Google has to be careful here. YouTube search is built on trust, creator quality, and useful discovery. If Ask YouTube gives wrong answers or pushes weak AI style results, users will reject it quickly. The real win will be simple. Help people find the best human made videos faster, with clear summaries that do not replace the creators.
