YouTube is expanding its AI-powered experience with new podcast tools, custom video feeds, and smarter playback features designed to make content discovery easier and more personal for users.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • YouTube Premium users are getting AI based podcast recommendations and smart playback controls.
  • The platform has introduced Auto speed and a new on the go listening mode for podcasts.
  • Users can now create custom AI-generated video feeds using text prompts.
  • YouTube is also making AI generated content labels more visible to help users identify fake or synthetic videos.

What Happened?

YouTube has announced a major update focused on podcasts and AI-driven personalization. The company is rolling out several new features for Premium subscribers, including AI podcast recommendations, dynamic playback controls, and personalized video feeds powered by custom prompts.

The move highlights YouTube’s growing focus on competing with platforms like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Netflix, especially as video podcasts continue to gain popularity worldwide.

YouTube Wants to Make Podcast Discovery Easier

One of the biggest additions is a new AI-powered recommendation system for podcasts. The feature builds on YouTube’s existing “Ask Music” tool, which already helps users create personalized playlists and radio stations.

Now, users can ask YouTube for podcast suggestions based on their mood, favorite genres, or shows they already enjoy. For example, someone could search for relaxing podcasts after work, business interviews, or comedy shows similar to their current favorites.

The feature is clearly designed to improve podcast discovery without requiring users to manually search through endless content libraries. YouTube appears to be targeting the same effortless discovery experience that has helped Spotify become popular among podcast listeners.

According to YouTube, Premium users watched more than 800 million hours of podcasts in April 2026, while YouTube Podcasts now has over 1 billion monthly active users.

Auto Speed Adjusts Playback Automatically

Another major feature is called Auto speed, which automatically changes playback speed depending on how people speak during a podcast episode.

Unlike traditional playback controls where users manually choose one speed for the entire episode, YouTube’s system can intelligently slow down or speed up different parts of the conversation. This helps listeners move through slower sections faster while keeping dense or important segments easier to understand.

The feature could become especially useful for long interviews, educational podcasts, or discussions where speaking speed changes constantly between hosts and guests.

Currently, Auto speed is available for Premium users on Android devices, while iOS support is expected in the coming months.

New On The Go Mode Targets Busy Listeners

YouTube is also introducing a new on the go listening mode aimed at people who consume podcasts while commuting, exercising, or multitasking.

The feature includes large easy to access controls for skipping ahead, going back, changing playback speed, or jumping to the next episode without needing to constantly look at the screen.

This background focused experience shows YouTube is trying to better serve users who traditionally rely on audio first podcast apps like Spotify or Apple Podcasts during daily activities.

AI Powered Custom Video Feeds Arrive

Beyond podcasts, YouTube is also testing AI-generated custom feeds that allow users to directly tell the platform what kind of videos they want to see.

Instead of relying only on the recommendation algorithm, users can now type prompts such as “show me something different” or “help me relax with meditation videos under 10 minutes.”

YouTube’s AI will then create a personalized feed based on those instructions. Users can even pin these custom feeds at the top of their homepage for quick access later.

The recommendation system studies watch history, likes, comments, searches, skipped videos, and viewing habits to improve suggestions over time.

YouTube Is Also Cracking Down on Hidden AI Videos

As part of its broader AI push, YouTube is also making labels for AI generated content more visible.

The company says videos containing “significant photorealistic AI use” may now receive automatic labels, even if creators fail to disclose the use of AI tools themselves.

This includes realistic AI generated people, voices, scenes, or events that could potentially confuse viewers online.

The company said:

“

If a creator doesn’t specify whether or not they used AI, but our systems detect significant photorealistic AI use, we will now automatically apply a label.

YouTube

The update comes as AI generated videos become increasingly realistic and harder for viewers to identify.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think YouTube is slowly turning into the most complete content platform on the internet. These updates are not just small quality of life improvements. They show YouTube understands how people now consume content across podcasts, short videos, and long form entertainment.

The AI podcast discovery tools and custom feeds could seriously challenge Spotify’s biggest advantage, which has always been personalized recommendations. At the same time, YouTube’s decision to add clearer AI labels feels necessary as fake videos become more convincing online. The platform is clearly preparing for an AI heavy future, and honestly, it looks far ahead of many competitors right now.
