A cybersecurity incident at Tata Electronics has triggered an investigation by Apple after a ransomware group claimed to have leaked thousands of files allegedly linked to Apple and Tesla.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Tata Electronics confirmed it experienced a cybersecurity incident on some of its systems.
  • Ransomware group World Leaks claims to have published more than 200,000 files totaling over 630 GB on the dark web.
  • The alleged leak includes documents connected to Apple and Tesla, along with emails, logs, and employee records.
  • Apple’s cybersecurity team is reviewing the incident, though sources say there has been no impact on operations or production.

What Happened?

Tata Electronics has confirmed that it recently detected a cybersecurity incident affecting some of its systems. The disclosure came after ransomware group World Leaks claimed it had published a large cache of data allegedly stolen from the company, including documents linked to Apple and Tesla.

While the scale of the reported leak has drawn attention, Tata Electronics says its business operations remain unaffected. Apple has also launched an internal review to understand the incident and determine whether any additional security measures may be needed.

‼️🚨 BREAKING: CONFIDENTIAL DOCUMENTS OF APPLE AND TESLA HAVE BEEN LEAKED.

Alleged Leak Includes Apple and Tesla Related Documents

According to reports, World Leaks has posted more than 200,000 files totaling over 630 GB on its dark web portal. The group claims the data was obtained from Tata Electronics, one of Apple’s fastest growing manufacturing partners in India.

Researchers who reviewed portions of the data said the archive appears to contain a wide range of information, including:

  • Emails spanning several years.
  • Event logs.
  • Employee passport copies, including foreign nationals.
  • Manufacturing specifications.
  • Material specification documents.
  • Component design records.

Several files reportedly reference Apple and carry labels such as “com.apple.factorydata.” Some documents were also said to contain notices identifying them as proprietary and confidential information belonging to Apple.

Among the reported files was a 52 page document detailing quality inspection standards for iPhone circuit board components. Researchers also found multiple files connected to Hosur, the location of Tata Electronics’ major iPhone manufacturing operations in Tamil Nadu.

Tesla Documents Also Surface

The alleged leak appears to include documents connected to Tesla as well.

Reports indicate that one folder referenced a component known as the “NV36 Chargeport Controller,” believed to be related to Tesla’s Model Y program. Another document reportedly contained internal drawings linked to Project Highland, Tesla’s well known internal codename for the updated Model 3 sedan.

Some of the files reportedly included confidentiality notices stating that the information constituted proprietary material and trade secrets.

Tesla has not publicly commented on the matter.

Apple Launches Security Review

Apple’s global cybersecurity team is now reviewing the incident and conducting what sources described as a full analysis.

People familiar with the matter said Apple is examining the root cause of the breach and evaluating whether further safeguards should be implemented. However, sources also indicated that Apple does not currently view the incident as a major operational threat.

According to people aware of the investigation, much of the exposed information appears to date back to around 2021. While the volume of files is significant, the actual exposure of critical operational data may be limited.

Apple and Tata Electronics have not reported any disruption to manufacturing activities or supply chain operations.

Tata Says Operations Remain Unaffected

In its statement, Tata Electronics said:

“

A few weeks ago, Tata Electronics identified a cybersecurity incident on some of our systems. Our response protocols were deployed immediately, and the incident has had no impact on our operations across businesses, which remain unaffected.

Tata Electronics

Sources also said the company received a ransom demand connected to the incident. Tata Electronics has not publicly commented on the reported demand.

The company has become an increasingly important part of Apple’s manufacturing strategy in India. Tata currently plays a major role in iPhone production and component manufacturing as Apple continues expanding beyond China.

With more than 75,000 employees and growing investments in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, Tata Electronics is viewed as one of India’s most important technology manufacturing companies.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think the most important part of this story is not the number of files allegedly leaked but what it says about the growing cybersecurity risks facing global supply chains. Tata Electronics has become a critical partner for Apple’s India expansion, making any security incident a closely watched event. While both companies say operations remain unaffected, the incident shows how manufacturers handling sensitive customer data are becoming prime targets for ransomware groups. The outcome of Apple’s investigation will likely shape future security practices across its supplier network.
