Google’s AI Search Push Triggers User Frustration
At its annual developer conference, Google introduced a major overhaul of Search. The company described it as the biggest upgrade to Search in more than 25 years. New features include AI Overviews, AI Mode, custom generative interfaces and agent style tools that can complete tasks for users.
Google says these updates are designed to make searching faster and more useful. However, many users online have reacted negatively to the changes. DuckDuckGo Sees Major Growth in the US
As the backlash against AI heavy search grows, DuckDuckGo appears to be benefiting from the shift in user sentiment.
According to data shared by the company, installs of the DuckDuckGo app in the US increased by an average of 18.1% week over week between May 20 and May 25. The growth lasted for six consecutive days and peaked at 30.5% on May 25.
The increase was even more dramatic on iPhones. DuckDuckGo said iOS installs jumped by an average of 33%, while peak single day growth reached nearly 70%.
Traffic to noai.duckduckgo.com, DuckDuckGo’s AI free search page, also surged during the same period. Visits reportedly grew by an average of 22.7%, with peak growth reaching 27.7%.
Interestingly, the company noted that the growth continued through the Memorial Day weekend in the US, a period when internet activity usually slows down. DuckDuckGo believes this suggests the reaction was tied directly to Google’s US focused AI announcements.
DuckDuckGo Is Not Rejecting AI Completely
Despite positioning itself as an alternative to AI heavy search, DuckDuckGo is not avoiding AI entirely.
The company already offers its own AI product called Duck.ai, which gives users access to models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Mistral AI. It also provides AI assisted search tools similar to Google’s AI Overviews.
The key difference is that DuckDuckGo makes those features optional. Users can disable AI generated answers entirely through a dedicated no AI version of the search engine without changing browser settings or using extensions.
