DeepSeek faced its longest service disruption since launch, leaving millions of users unable to access its AI chatbot for over 13 hours.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • DeepSeek went offline twice within hours, leading to a combined outage of over 13 hours.
  • No official reason has been disclosed, though technical issues are suspected.
  • This is the longest consumer facing outage since the platform launched globally in January 2025.
  • The incident comes amid rising competition and anticipation for DeepSeek’s next model.

What Happened?

DeepSeek’s chatbot service went down late Sunday night and continued facing disruptions into Monday morning. While the company briefly restored services, a second outage followed soon after, extending downtime significantly.

DeepSeek’s chatbot suffered its longest outage in over a year, remaining offline for roughly 10–12 hours before service was restored.

Timeline of the Outage

The disruption began at 9:35 p.m. China Standard Time on Sunday, when DeepSeek’s status page first reported issues affecting both its web and app based chatbot services. Engineers initially marked the problem as resolved at 11:23 p.m., but the fix did not hold for long.

Just under an hour later, at 12:20 a.m. Monday, a second incident was reported. Multiple attempts were made to stabilize the platform, with fixes logged at 1:24 a.m. and again at 9:13 a.m.. The service was finally restored at 10:33 a.m., marking a total disruption window of more than 13 hours.

According to monitoring platforms like Downdetector, users began reporting issues as early as Sunday evening, confirming the widespread nature of the outage.

No Official Cause Yet

DeepSeek has not provided any explanation for the outage so far. While the company labeled it as a “major outage” on its status page, it did not specify whether the issue stemmed from server failures, software bugs, or internal updates.

This lack of transparency has left room for speculation. Typically, outages of this scale can be caused by:

  • Server overload or infrastructure failures
  • Software bugs introduced during updates
  • Unexpected system conflicts during deployment

Unlike previous disruptions earlier this year that were linked to malicious cyberattacks, there is currently no indication that external interference played a role in this incident.

Why This Outage Stands Out?

This event is particularly significant because it directly impacted consumer users, not just developers. Earlier outages in January 2025 mainly affected DeepSeek’s API services during its viral growth phase.

In contrast, this disruption hit the main chatbot interface, making it inaccessible for everyday users who rely on it for work, research, and daily tasks.

User reactions quickly surfaced on Chinese social platforms, highlighting how dependent many have become on the service. One user wrote, “Only after DeepSeek went down did I realise I no longer knew how to work without it.”

Despite the outage, DeepSeek has maintained an impressive uptime of nearly 99 percent since its launch, making this incident an unusual setback for the company.

Growing Pressure from Competitors

The outage comes at a time when competition in the AI space is intensifying rapidly.

Since the beginning of the year, several major Chinese tech players have rolled out new AI models and services, including:

  • Alibaba
  • ByteDance
  • Tencent

Other emerging competitors such as Zhipu AI, MiniMax, and Moonshot AI have also introduced new offerings, increasing pressure on DeepSeek to maintain its edge.

At the same time, DeepSeek’s earlier R1 model, launched in January 2025, had already shaken the global AI landscape by rivaling leading models from US companies.

What’s Next for DeepSeek?

Attention is now shifting toward DeepSeek’s upcoming model, widely referred to as V4. Reports suggest the new version could be multimodal, capable of generating text, images, and video.

Interestingly, the company is said to be working more closely with local hardware partners like Huawei instead of relying on US chipmakers such as Nvidia. This move may reflect a broader push to reduce dependence on foreign technology.

However, DeepSeek has not confirmed any release timeline, leaving both users and industry watchers waiting for clarity.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

I think this outage is more than just a technical hiccup. It shows how deeply people now depend on AI tools like DeepSeek in their daily work. When a service goes down for this long, it exposes how fragile that reliance can be.

At the same time, the timing is not great for DeepSeek. With competitors launching new models and expectations building around V4, even a single major outage can shake user confidence. If DeepSeek wants to stay ahead, it needs to not only innovate but also prove it can deliver consistent reliability.
