Alibaba is stepping deeper into the artificial intelligence race with a new AI chip designed specifically for AI agents, signaling a bigger push toward building its own complete AI ecosystem.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Alibaba unveiled the new Zhenwu M890 AI chip with major performance improvements over its previous generation.
  • The chip is designed for advanced AI agents that can handle long tasks and complex workflows.
  • Alibaba also announced its upcoming Qwen3.7 Max AI model alongside a long term chip roadmap.
  • The move highlights China’s growing effort to reduce reliance on foreign AI hardware suppliers like Nvidia.

What Happened?

Alibaba has officially introduced its latest artificial intelligence processor called the Zhenwu M890, a new chip developed by its semiconductor division T Head. The company says the processor delivers three times the performance of its earlier Zhenwu 810E chip.

The announcement comes at a time when Chinese technology companies are under increasing pressure to build domestic alternatives to foreign semiconductors due to ongoing US export restrictions on advanced AI chips.

Alibaba Is Designing for AI Agents

The biggest detail about the Zhenwu M890 is not just raw power. Alibaba says the chip was built specifically for AI agents, which are AI systems capable of carrying out long running tasks with limited human help.

Unlike traditional AI workloads that mainly focus on inference or chatbot style responses, AI agents need much larger memory bandwidth, stronger communication between models, and the ability to handle complex workflows over long periods of time.

According to Alibaba, the M890 includes 144 GB GPU memory and 800 GB per second interchip bandwidth, allowing it to support demanding enterprise AI applications.

The company appears to be preparing for a future where AI agents become a major part of business software and automation systems.

Alibaba Reveals Multi Year AI Chip Roadmap

Alibaba also shared an ambitious roadmap for future AI chips. The company confirmed that the Zhenwu M890 will be followed by the V900 processor in 2027 and the J900 processor in 2028.

Both future chips are expected to bring another major performance jump.

This long term strategy mirrors the product cycle approach used by companies like Nvidia. It also shows that Alibaba is treating semiconductor development as a long term investment rather than a short term reaction to export controls.

The company previously pledged more than 380 billion yuan, around 53 billion dollars, toward cloud and AI infrastructure investments over three years.

China’s Push for AI Self Reliance Continues

The launch of the Zhenwu M890 is part of a broader trend inside China’s technology sector. Chinese firms are increasingly developing their own AI chips as access to advanced Nvidia processors becomes more restricted.

Alibaba now joins companies like Huawei and Cambricon in the race to build domestic AI hardware alternatives.

Analysts say the M890 may not fully match Nvidia’s most advanced chips in raw performance, but it could still become an important option inside China’s market.

Counterpoint Research Associate Director Brady Wang said:

“

M890 is a small but real contribution to China’s AI self sufficiency … On raw silicon power, M890 is not a true competitor to H200. But it does not need to be. In the China market, it is a believable replacement for H200.

SemiAnalysis analyst Myron Xie also noted that Alibaba’s AI chips are already gaining traction with external customers and becoming one of the more popular domestic AI hardware platforms in China.

Alibaba Is Building a Full Stack AI Platform

Alongside the chip announcement, Alibaba also revealed its next generation AI model called Qwen3.7 Max.

The model is designed for advanced coding tasks and long running AI agent operations. Alibaba claims the model can operate continuously for up to 35 hours without performance degradation.

By launching both a chip and AI model together, Alibaba is showing its ambition to build a fully integrated AI platform that combines hardware, cloud infrastructure, models, and applications under one ecosystem.

The company also revealed that more than 560,000 Zhenwu chips have already been shipped to over 400 customers across 20 industries, including financial services and automotive companies.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think Alibaba’s latest move is much bigger than just another AI chip launch. The company is clearly trying to build its own AI empire from the ground up. What stands out most is the focus on AI agents because that is where the industry is rapidly heading. Instead of simply copying today’s AI hardware trends, Alibaba seems to be preparing for what enterprise AI could look like several years from now. China’s AI race is no longer only about catching up to Nvidia. It is now about building independent ecosystems that can survive without Western technology.
