X is set to launch a new standalone messaging app called XChat on April 17, marking a key step in Elon Musk’s vision to build an all in one digital platform.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • XChat will launch on April 17 for iPhone and iPad users with advanced messaging features.
  • The app includes end to end encryption, disappearing messages, and screenshot blocking.
  • It is part of Elon Musk’s larger plan to create a super app similar to WeChat.
  • XChat aims to attract users with privacy focused design and no ads or tracking.

What Happened?

X has announced the launch of XChat, a standalone messaging app arriving on iOS devices on April 17. The app introduces a new communication platform separate from X’s existing direct messaging system.

The move signals a shift in strategy, as the company builds a dedicated app with advanced privacy and communication features instead of upgrading messaging within the main platform.

A New Step Toward a Super App Vision

XChat is not just another messaging app. It plays a central role in Elon Musk’s long term goal of turning X into a super app that combines communication, payments, and digital services in one place.

Musk has often pointed to WeChat as a model for this vision. With over 500 million monthly active users on X, the company now has a strong base to introduce such integrated services.

The messaging app is expected to act as the core communication layer, which could later connect with payments, AI tools like Grok, and other services within the X ecosystem.

Built for Privacy and Security First

One of the biggest highlights of XChat is its strong focus on user privacy and security. The app introduces several features designed to protect conversations from surveillance and misuse:

  • End-to-End encryption ensures that only the sender and receiver can read messages.
  • Self destructing messages automatically disappear after a set time.
  • Screenshot blocking prevents users from capturing chats without permission.
  • No ads and no user tracking, according to the company listing.

The platform also reduces reliance on traditional identifiers. Users can sign up without a phone number, instead using their existing X account. This approach aims to reduce risks like SIM swapping and improve anonymity.

However, some experts note that users who already linked phone numbers to their X accounts may still have indirect exposure.

Features That Go Beyond Basic Messaging

XChat brings a wide range of features that position it beyond a simple chat app:

  • Edit and delete messages even after sending.
  • Large group chats supporting up to 481 participants.
  • Voice and video calls across devices.
  • Disappearing chats within minutes for sensitive conversations.

The app is also built using the Rust programming language, which is known for its performance and security advantages.

Development and Availability

XChat has been in development for some time. It began internal testing in May 2025 and later entered public beta on iOS in March 2026.

The app is currently available for pre order on the Apple App Store and will automatically download on supported devices once released. It requires devices running iOS 26 or later and iPadOS 26 or later.

An Android release timeline has not yet been confirmed.

Industry Context and Competition

The launch comes at a time when privacy concerns in messaging apps are under intense scrutiny. Recent debates around data handling and platform security have pushed users to look for safer alternatives.

Rival platforms have faced criticism over data practices, while others have dealt with operational uncertainty. In this environment, XChat is positioning itself as a privacy first alternative that avoids data selling and tracking.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

I think this is one of the most serious moves we have seen from X so far. XChat is not just a messaging app, it is the foundation of something much bigger. If X executes this well, it could genuinely reshape how people use a single platform for everything from chatting to payments.

The focus on privacy feels timely, especially when users are becoming more aware of how their data is used. But the real test will be whether people trust X enough to move their private conversations here.
