Why the Major Doesn’t Need the Biggest Prize Pool
The Major sits alongside the largest Counter-Strike tournaments by prize money, but several commercial events offer comparable or larger payouts:

That makes the headline payout only one part of the money generated around the tournament.
What a Major Is
What Makes a Major Different
A Major is a Valve-sponsored championship at the top of competitive Counter-Strike, with two events held each year. Valve selects an external tournament organiser and approves the host location, while the organiser handles the venue, production, and event schedule. A CS2 Major also attracts a much larger audience than most regular tournaments. The Cologne Major in 2026 peaked at around 2.75 million concurrent viewers. Earlier that year, IEM Krakow set the record for a non-Major event at around 1.39 million.
How Teams Qualify and Advance
The current Major format includes 32 teams selected through the Valve Regional Standings. Sixteen begin in Stage 1, while eight enter directly in Stage 2 and another eight in Stage 3 based on their ranking. The stages use a Swiss system, where teams with the same win-loss record face each other. Three wins move a team forward, while three losses eliminate it. In Stage 1 and Stage 2, some matches are best-of-one, meaning one map decides the winner, while advancement and elimination matches use best-of-three. Stage 3 is played entirely as best-of-three, where the first team to win two maps takes the series. Eight teams eventually reach the single-elimination playoffs. The grand final is best-of-five, so the first team to win three maps becomes Major champion.
The Prize Money Is the Smallest Part
The $1.25 million prize pool represents only one part of the money connected to a Major. Tournament-specific items can add substantial revenue beyond the payout for final placement:
- Team and player stickers: Sales of team logos and player autographs form part of the commercial revenue generated around the Major.
- Major Shop and Pass: In 2026, 50% of this revenue is distributed between the tournament organiser, teams, and players. The champion is allocated 2.85% of the total.
- Souvenirs: Major-specific souvenir items are also sold through the event system and contribute to the same revenue pool.
The Major winner receives $500,000 from the prize fund. Based on non-audited HLTV figures and the 2026 distribution model, the winning side could receive an estimated $420,000 to $480,000 from Major Shop and Pass revenue. The 2026 Reset
On May 22, Valve changed the Major revenue system by removing sticker capsules and replacing them with direct purchases through tokens. Each team logo and player autograph could now be bought separately, while its token price changed according to relative demand. Popular stickers became more expensive as purchases increased, while lower-demand stickers became cheaper. Some of the most sought-after stickers eventually exceeded 150,000 tokens, or roughly $1,500. The change also affected team income.
HLTV reported that one Stage 1 organisation had earned about $60,000 from Cologne item sales, with another $60,000 allocated to its players, while a Stage 2 organisation reported just over $120,000. By comparison, a comparable Contender sticker capsule at the previous Budapest Major generated around $600,000 before the player split. These figures came directly from participating teams and were reported while Cologne sales were still active, so they weren’t final audited totals. On July 29, Valve adjusted the system again after acknowledging that the original pricing model had produced unreasonable prices. The new Ranked sticker series reduced the highest sticker prices from around $1,500 to $60 at the time of release.
Where the Major Money Goes
Major revenue doesn’t become profit for the organisation or players immediately. Running a CS2 roster includes salaries, coaches, bootcamps, travel, accommodation, player transfers, and support staff. SINNERS estimated spending from around $25,000 to $35,000 on flights and hotels in the first quarter alone, while another CS2 project operated on a €30,000 monthly budget split roughly equally between salaries and tournament expenses. Player payouts also depend on contracts. Under the 2026 Major Shop model, half of a team’s allocation goes directly to its five players. For the champion, that works out to 0.285% of total Shop and Pass revenue per player, or an estimated $42,000 to $48,000 based on non-audited HLTV figures for Cologne. Prize-money shares are separate and vary by organisation.
What’s Next for the Major
The next CS2 Major will take place in Singapore from November 25 to December 13. PGL will host the event, which will bring a Counter-Strike Major to Southeast Asia for the first time. The field will include 32 teams selected through the Valve Regional Standings on November 2, with ranking position determining which stage each team enters. The tournament will again use three stages before eight teams advance to the playoffs at Singapore Indoor Stadium. The final stage runs from December 10 to 13, ending with a best-of-five grand final.
The Value of the Title

The official payout is fixed before the event, while additional income continues to depend on the commercial system built around Major participation.
