A new AI system from Siemens aims to automate complex engineering workflows and improve efficiency across industrial operations.

Quick Summary (TLDR)

  • Siemens launched Eigen Engineering Agent, an AI system that can plan and execute automation tasks.
  • Works inside TIA Portal to generate code, configure systems, and validate outputs.
  • Claims 2 to 5 times faster execution and up to 50 percent higher efficiency.
  • Designed to address global engineering talent shortages and reduce repetitive work.

What Happened?

Siemens has introduced the Eigen Engineering Agent, a new industrial AI system designed to automate end to end engineering workflows. The system operates directly within real engineering environments and can independently plan, execute, and validate automation tasks.

Unveiled at Hannover Messe 2026, the product marks a shift from AI tools that assist engineers to systems that can complete engineering work autonomously.

From AI Assistant to Autonomous Engineer

The Eigen Engineering Agent represents a major step forward in how AI is used in industrial environments. Unlike traditional AI assistants that only provide suggestions, this system actively performs engineering tasks inside Siemens’ TIA Portal platform.

It can:

  • Write PLC code using languages like SCL and LAD.
  • Configure industrial devices and systems.
  • Generate test logic and documentation.
  • Fix syntax and compile errors automatically.
  • Apply bulk changes across engineering projects.

The agent reads project structures, understands system relationships, and produces outputs aligned with existing configurations, even in legacy setups. It continuously evaluates its own work and refines results until predefined performance targets are met.

According to Siemens, this allows engineers to shift their focus from repetitive and error prone tasks to higher value design and validation work.

Performance Gains and Industry Impact

Siemens claims significant productivity improvements with the Eigen AI system. Internal and pilot data suggest:

  • 2 to 5 times faster execution of engineering tasks.
  • Up to 50 percent higher engineering efficiency.
  • Up to 80 percent improvement in solution quality.

These gains come at a critical time for the manufacturing sector. Industry estimates suggest a shortage of up to seven million workers by 2030, with many engineering roles remaining unfilled.

By automating routine workflows, Siemens is positioning Eigen as a solution to both productivity challenges and workforce gaps.

Real World Deployment and Early Results

The Eigen Engineering Agent has already been tested across more than 100 companies in 19 countries. Early adopters include ANDRITZ Metals, CASMT, and Prism Systems.

Companies reported several benefits:

  • Reduced specialist handoffs across teams.
  • Faster project delivery timelines.
  • Simplified setup and debugging processes.

One deployment at CASMT showed how the system could turn complex multi discipline engineering tasks into streamlined workflows, reducing the need for manual coordination between teams.

Prism Systems also highlighted how the tool bridges the gap between general AI capabilities and real industrial applications, making AI more usable in production environments.

Built for Industrial Scale and Complexity

The Eigen Engineering Agent is integrated into Siemens’ TIA Portal, which has over 600,000 users globally. It is also part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio and available through the Siemens Digital Exchange marketplace.

The system is designed to work with real world industrial constraints, including:

  • Handling large volumes of operational data.
  • Maintaining engineering accuracy and reliability.
  • Adapting to existing project standards and structures.

However, Siemens also acknowledges ongoing challenges, particularly around data quality and the shortage of skilled workers capable of managing AI driven systems.

A Strategic Push into Industrial AI

The launch of Eigen is part of Siemens’ broader investment in artificial intelligence. The company has committed €1 billion to industrial AI development and employs more than 1,500 AI specialists globally.

Industry analysts, including McKinsey, estimate that AI could reduce manufacturing and supply chain costs by up to 500 billion dollars, highlighting the scale of potential impact.

Siemens is positioning Eigen as one of the first commercially available systems that moves beyond assistance into full industrial execution.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

I see this as a real turning point for industrial AI. For years, AI tools have been helping engineers, but now we are seeing systems that actually do the work. That changes everything.

If Siemens delivers on these claims, Eigen could quietly reshape how factories are designed and run. The biggest shift is not just speed or efficiency. It is the idea that AI can become a true engineering partner inside real production systems.
