Opera Neon introduces MCP support, allowing external AI tools to directly access and control your browser session in real time.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Opera Neon now supports Model Context Protocol (MCP) for AI integration.
  • External AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude can control the browser.
  • AI can read tabs, click, fill forms, and automate tasks.
  • Feature reduces manual work and improves productivity across workflows.

What Happened?

Opera has rolled out MCP Connector support in Opera Neon, enabling external AI tools to directly interact with a live browser session. This update allows AI systems to access real time web context and perform actions without requiring users to manually transfer information.

The feature is available to Opera Neon subscribers and marks a major step toward fully agent driven browsing.

You can now browse with your own AI inside Opera Neon!

How MCP Changes Browser Interaction?

The Model Context Protocol, originally developed by Anthropic, acts as a bridge between AI systems and external applications. With its adoption growing across platforms, Opera Neon is now bringing this standard into the browser itself.

This means AI tools can now:

  • Access open tabs and read content directly.
  • Take screenshots of web pages.
  • Navigate websites and open new tabs.
  • Fill forms and perform searches automatically.

Unlike traditional AI tools that operate in isolated environments, Opera Neon allows AI to work inside an actual browser session. This gives AI access to live, authenticated contexts, including logged in apps and dashboards.

A Shift Toward Agentic Browsing

Opera Neon has been positioned as an agentic browser since launch, featuring tools like Tasks, Cards, Do, and Make. These tools already allowed AI to assist users within the browser.

With MCP support, Opera is expanding those capabilities beyond its built in AI. Now external tools like Lovable and n8n can connect directly and operate within the browser.

For example:

  • Developers using Claude can build and test web apps directly inside the browser.
  • Design tools like Lovable can replicate UI from live web pages.
  • Automation platforms like n8n can trigger workflows that interact with websites.

This removes the need for copy paste workflows, screenshots, and manual instructions, which have traditionally slowed down AI assisted work.

Real Time Context Without Friction

One of the biggest limitations of AI tools has been their lack of context. Users often need to explain what they are seeing or manually provide data.

With Opera Neon MCP:

  • AI comes to the context instead of users explaining it.
  • Workflows become continuous instead of fragmented.
  • Tools can collaborate directly with each other.

As Monika Kurczynska, Director of R&D for browser AI at Opera, said:

“

Last year, we launched Browser Operator as a first step toward an agentic browser. Now we are opening those capabilities to external AI clients through MCP, so they can act directly inside the browser, not outside it. The browser is where workflows live, but AI has been disconnected from it. With Opera Neon, we connect popular AI clients directly to an agentic browser, so they can operate where users already work, without needing to recreate context.

Security and Control Considerations

Giving AI access to a browser raises important concerns. Opera has addressed this with:

  • Secure authentication via MCP server URL.
  • Persistent proxy system to maintain stable connections.
  • User controlled permissions for read and write actions.

By default, only basic read features are enabled. Users can choose to allow more advanced actions like clicking or form filling.

Still, users are advised to be cautious when granting AI access to sensitive browsing data.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

I think this is one of the most practical AI updates we have seen in a while. Instead of making AI smarter in isolation, Opera is putting it exactly where real work happens, inside the browser. That alone changes everything.

The biggest win here is not automation, it is removing friction. No more switching tabs, copying text, or explaining context again and again. If this approach becomes standard, browsers could become the central hub for all AI-driven work.

At the same time, I would be careful. Giving AI this level of access is powerful, but it also means trusting it with everything you see online.
