Microsoft switched on its India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad on August 6, 2026, its fourth and largest in the country. Early users include HDFC Bank, Adani Group, Bajaj Finserv and PB Pay.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • Microsoft now runs four owned cloud regions in India, adding Hyderabad to existing sites in Pune, Chennai and Mumbai.
  • The Hyderabad region carries three Availability Zones and uses air-cooled chillers that consume zero water for cooling.
  • Microsoft has committed $20.5 billion to India’s cloud and AI buildout, split across two separate investment announcements.
  • HDFC Bank will use the new region as a disaster recovery site for its existing Central India footprint.
  • IDC projects India’s public cloud spending will reach $45.7 billion by 2030, growing 22.2% each year.

What Happened?

Microsoft made the India South Central region generally available in Hyderabad, Telangana, letting customers run eligible Microsoft Cloud services from the state. The region ships with three Availability Zones built to India’s regulatory and seismic-zone requirements.

The launch lifts Microsoft’s owned India cloud regions to four, joining Central India in Pune, South India in Chennai and West India in Mumbai. Microsoft also operates two regions with Jio, named Jio India West and Jio India Central. Customers can check which services are live in the region before moving workloads.

Microsoft ties the region to a $20.5 billion India commitment. That figure combines $3 billion announced in January 2025 and a further $17.5 billion announced in December 2025, the second of which lands as hyperscaler market share in Asia becomes a contested prize.

Microsoft’s newest India datacenter is now live, marking an important step in strengthening the country’s AI infrastructure. See how Microsoft is shaping the next phase of India’s AI economy.

Sovereignty Now Sets The Baseline

Dr William Lee, senior research director at IDC, placed proximity, sovereignty and resilience in the baseline column for Indian enterprises rather than the differentiator column, as AI adoption shifts from pilots to production. IDC forecasts India’s public cloud services spending at $45.7 billion by 2030, expanding 22.2% annually, with AI spending growing at double that rate. That sits inside a worldwide cloud spending curve that has favored in-country capacity for three years.

The build reflects that shift. Three Availability Zones give regulated customers in-country failover, and Microsoft describes the design as sovereign-ready, with controls aligned to Indian data governance expectations.

Early Access Points To Disaster Recovery

HDFC Bank, one of the named early customers, described the Hyderabad region in recovery terms. Atish Bhanushali, Senior Vice President II and Head Cloud Infra at HDFC Bank said:

“

Having a dedicated DR region perfectly complements our Central India footprint, strengthening our business continuity and cross-cloud resilience.

Other early customers cited similar ground. Bajaj Finance chief information officer Mudit Mehrish pointed to data residency, resilience and scalability. PB Pay chief executive Harsh Vardhan Masta pointed to alignment with India’s regulatory requirements. Adani Digital Lab director Srushti Adani pointed to scale and evolving business needs.

The customer statements show demand for capacity and residency. They do not show measured AI workload performance, and Microsoft has left three things undisclosed:

  • Which Azure AI services and GPU classes are available in Hyderabad at general availability?
  • How much compute capacity the three Availability Zones hold?
  • When the remaining Microsoft Cloud services reach the region?

India’s Hyperscale Race Tightens

Alphabet and Amazon are both expanding India data center capacity. Google’s $15 billion India data centre project has drawn accusations from environmentalists that authorities fast-tracked approvals without weighing risks to water supplies and wildlife, allegations the government rejects.

Microsoft’s cooling choice reads as a direct answer to that pressure. India South Central uses air-cooled chillers that consume zero water for cooling, and Microsoft has contracted more than 1,000 megawatts of new solar, wind and hybrid capacity in India with developers including ReNew and Amplus, of which over 630 megawatts already operates.

Adoption figures supply the demand case. Microsoft says more than 90% of NIFTY 100 companies in its analysis use Microsoft 365 Copilot, while Infosys, TCS, Wipro and LTM have collectively signed for more than 400,000 Copilot seats against 30 million paid seats globally, a pattern visible in broader Microsoft 365 adoption data and in Microsoft’s wider revenue mix.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

A fourth Indian region answers a narrower question than the AI framing suggests. Indian banks and regulated firms needed a second in-country failover target beyond Pune, Chennai and Mumbai, and Hyderabad supplies it with three zones and sovereign-ready controls. AI workloads follow once services light up, which is why the early customer statements describe business continuity work first and model training not at all.

What’s next: Microsoft says services become available in the region over time, so teams already running Azure workloads in India should check the region availability page before committing production systems, confirm which paired region backs their failover design, and review data residency terms with their compliance teams. Watch for GPU-backed Azure AI service availability in Hyderabad, further capacity commitments from Alphabet and Amazon, and any regulatory review of water and power use as Telangana absorbs hyperscale load.
