National Student Survey

Amongst all the controversy surrounding higher education in the UK, the latest edition of the National Student Survey has revealed that 85% of all UK students are satisfied with their overall university experience.

Close to 304,000 final-year students responded to the annual survey, which assesses the way that students feel about their university career before joining the job hunt as graduates. This year, the University of Bath was rated as the providing the most satisfactory university experience with an overall satisfaction rate of 94%.

Bath finished narrowly ahead of a group of universities that sat on 93% in this year’s National Student Survey, which included the universities of Buckingham and Keele, both of which are campus universities. The University of Cambridge ended on 92% – the same as the Open University – with Oxford finishing just behind on 91%.

Sir Alan Langlands, chief executive of HEFCE, said:

“These strong results continue to demonstrate the high-quality student experience provided by universities and colleges in the UK. The NSS provides crucial information which informs student choices but drives improvements in learning and teaching across the sector.”

Overall, satisfaction rates remained at an all-time high, equalling last year’s overall satisfaction rate of 85%. The standard of teaching was deemed to have stayed level, polling 86%. There were improvements in satisfaction with university’s organisation and management (78%) and departments charting personal development (82%).

Student satisfaction scores for assessment and feedback also increased by two percentage points this year, rising to 72 per cent. For the second time, student unions were also assessed, with overall satisfaction scores rising a single point to 67 per cent.

Janet Beer, chair of the HE Public Information Steering Group, said: “It is particularly pleasing to see the increase in the numbers of students participating in the survey and that the improvements in the areas of assessment, feedback and learning resources are being maintained.”
