Phishing statistics are useful when they help a business decide what to protect and what to practise. They become less useful when every detection count is presented as a victim count, or a change in one research dataset becomes a claim about every attack worldwide. The figures published in 2026 deserve attention, together with the definitions and observation windows behind them.

For business leaders, the practical task is to connect the evidence with decisions employees make: opening a document, following a sign-in request, approving a payment or reporting something unusual. A threat report should help prioritize that work, rather than simply provide a larger number for the next security presentation.

Read the figures with their boundaries intact

Microsoft’s October 2026 reporting states that phishing accounted for 23% of observed intrusions in its 2026 findings, compared with 7% in 2025. The 2026 report covers trends observed from July 2025 to June 2026. These are shares of the intrusions observed in the reporting, not a measurement of the growth in all phishing attacks worldwide.

The report’s published findings also record more than 145 million QR-code phishing attacks detected by Microsoft Defender for Office 365 between July 2025 and June 2026. That figure describes detections within the named product’s visibility. It should not be read as 145 million compromised people, or as a count of every QR-based attack on every service.

The distinction changes what a business can reasonably conclude. A share describes the composition of a dataset, while a detection count describes recorded activity. Neither directly predicts the probability that a particular employee or organization will be compromised. Use the findings to choose scenarios to investigate, then examine exposure within the business’s own environment.

Translate the findings into ordinary work

Start with a small set of high-consequence journeys. For finance, that could be a changed bank account in an apparently familiar conversation. For employees generally, it could be a shared-file invitation leading to a sign-in page. For administrators, it could be an urgent message asking them to resolve an account or software problem. Map who receives the request and what they can authorize.

QR codes deserve a place in that review because they can move a task from one device to another. An employee reading an email on a work computer may scan its code with a phone. Ask how the organization expects the person to verify the destination, continue through an approved service and report uncertainty. Include the mobile device in the discussion rather than assuming the work remains inside the desktop inbox.

Keep exercises focused on decisions. An authorized scenario can test whether a payment change reaches the correct verifier or whether a suspicious invitation reaches the reporting route. Use synthetic material and explain the learning purpose. The result should identify a concrete improvement, such as a clearer verification procedure or a reporting option staff can actually find.

Strengthen the controls around the employee

Authentication is a practical place to review exposure. CISA recommends multifactor authentication and encourages businesses to use phishing-resistant methods. Prioritize accounts that control business email, financial systems and administrative access. Check recovery procedures as well as normal sign-in, because employees need a dependable way to regain access without inventing a shortcut.

Then examine the handoff after a report. Who investigates it? Who can stop a pending transaction or remove a confirmed threat from other inboxes? What happens outside normal working hours? A well-designed reporting button is only the beginning of the process. Assigning an owner and an escalation route makes the report operationally useful.

Measure that process with local evidence. Review how often required verifications occur, whether employees can explain the reporting route and how quickly the responsible team acts on a confirmed incident. These observations answer questions about the organization’s readiness. They also help distinguish an improvement in reporting confidence from a deterioration in security when the number of employee reports rises.

Turn awareness into a maintained program

Noon Security brings email protection, phishing simulations and role-based employee learning into a broader workforce-security platform. For a business reviewing the 2026 findings, it is one option to assess when connecting protection with practical staff training. A useful evaluation follows a relevant scenario from receipt and reporting through investigation and learning, using the organization’s own procedures. It should establish whether the team can operate that process consistently and whether the lessons fit the people receiving them. External threat data helps select the scenarios; the evaluation needs to demonstrate how the product supports the local workflow.

Give the next review a narrow, useful objective. Choose one sensitive process, verify that its contact and approval records are current, and rehearse an unusual request with the people responsible. Record what failed and assign the correction. Repeating that work across important processes gives the organization a clearer picture of readiness than a list of headline statistics.

The 2026 data is a reason to examine how trust becomes access or authorization inside a business. Preserving the scope of the numbers keeps the analysis credible. Turning the relevant risks into maintained procedures gives the research a practical result.
