Microsoft is expanding the AI capabilities inside Edge with new Copilot tools that can summarize tabs, compare information across websites, and even turn articles into podcasts.

Quick Summary

  • Microsoft Edge can now use Copilot AI to analyze and summarize information from multiple open tabs.
  • The browser is getting new AI tools including Study and Learn mode, AI podcasts, and a writing assistant.
  • Microsoft is also bringing Journeys, screen sharing, and long term memory features to Edge on mobile.
  • Users can optionally allow Copilot to access browsing history for more personalized answers.

What Happened?

Microsoft has announced a major update for Microsoft Edge that brings several new AI powered features directly into the browser. The update focuses heavily on improving productivity and making Copilot more useful while browsing the web on both desktop and mobile.

One of the biggest additions allows Copilot to pull information from multiple open tabs at the same time. Users can ask the AI assistant to summarize articles, compare products, organize research, or extract details from websites without switching between tabs manually.

Edge just made it easier to go from first tab to final plan, wherever you go.

Your favorite Copilot experiences, plus new ones, are now available directly in Edge on desktop and, for the first time, on the Edge mobile app. See what’s new 🧵

Copilot Can Analyze Multiple Tabs

The headline feature in this update is the ability for Copilot to work across active tabs in Edge. Users can click the Copilot button and ask questions about what is currently open in the browser.

For example, someone comparing hotel bookings, shopping deals, or travel destinations can ask Copilot to create a side by side comparison using information from different tabs. Microsoft says this should reduce the need to constantly jump between websites while researching online.

The feature was previously tied to something called Copilot Mode, but Microsoft is now retiring that standalone experience. Instead, these AI features are becoming part of the standard Edge browsing experience.

Microsoft also confirmed that some of the earlier agentic AI tools from Copilot Mode have been moved into its “Browse with Copilot” experience.

New Study and Learn Mode Arrives

Microsoft is also introducing a new Study and Learn mode for Edge desktop users. The feature can transform articles and webpages into interactive study sessions.

Users can ask Copilot to explain difficult topics in simpler language or generate quizzes based on the content they are reading. Microsoft appears to be positioning this as a competitor to AI learning tools like Google’s NotebookLM.

The company says users can simply ask Copilot to “Quiz me on this topic” to generate interactive learning prompts.

AI Podcasts and Writing Assistant

Another major addition is an AI-powered podcast tool that can convert open tabs into podcast style audio summaries. This allows users to listen to web content while multitasking or traveling.

Microsoft is also adding a new AI writing assistant inside Edge. When users begin typing on websites, Copilot can help rewrite text, improve clarity, or adjust tone depending on the context.

The AI podcast feature is currently rolling out in English speaking markets.

Mobile Edge Gets More AI Features

Microsoft is also expanding Copilot features on mobile devices. Edge users on smartphones can now share their screen with Copilot and ask voice based questions about what they are viewing in real time.

The company says users will see “clear visual cues” whenever Copilot is actively listening, viewing the screen, or generating answers.

Edge mobile is also getting the Journeys feature, which organizes browsing history into topics and projects. This can help users continue research sessions or revisit previously viewed content more easily.

Additionally, Microsoft is introducing long term memory for Copilot in Edge. With user permission, the AI assistant can remember previous conversations and browsing activity to deliver more personalized responses over time.

SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think Microsoft is slowly turning Edge into one of the most AI integrated browsers available today. The ability to compare tabs, summarize research, and even convert webpages into podcasts feels genuinely useful instead of just experimental AI fluff. At the same time, features like browsing history access and long term memory will likely raise privacy questions for some users. Still, Microsoft clearly wants Edge and Copilot to become a daily productivity tool rather than just another web browser.
