Elon Musk has released X’s recommendation algorithm to the public, but the move comes amid criticism over transparency, content moderation, and AI misuse.

Quick Summary – TLDR:

  • X has open sourced its entire recommendation feed algorithm on GitHub, used to rank both organic and paid posts.
  • The system is powered by Grok, the transformer model from Musk’s xAI, and replaces most manual rule-based filters.
  • Musk promises regular four-week updates, including detailed developer notes on changes to the algorithm.
  • The move follows a $140 million EU fine and scrutiny over Grok’s misuse in creating deepfake images.

What Happened?

Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, has open sourced the full code that powers its “For You” feed. The release includes all logic used to recommend posts and ads, and is based on the same transformer architecture behind xAI’s Grok. Musk had pledged this release a week prior and followed through, claiming it is part of a larger mission to increase transparency on the platform.

We have open-sourced our new 𝕏 algorithm, powered by the same transformer architecture as xAI’s Grok model.

X Opens Its Algorithm to the World

On Tuesday, X published the source code for its core feed algorithm on GitHub. Within six hours, the repository gained over 1,600 stars, as developers and observers rushed to analyze the mechanics behind what users see on the platform.

The feed recommendation system considers user behavior like likes, replies, reposts, and even video completions. Unlike traditional platforms that use rule-based filtering, X’s system relies heavily on AI-powered predictions, driven by user interaction data.

According to the GitHub documentation:

  • The system pulls posts from accounts a user follows (via the Thunder module).
  • It also fetches content from across the platform that might interest users but comes from outside their network (via the Phoenix module).
  • All candidate content is scored by Grok-based models to estimate engagement likelihood.
  • Scores are adjusted to ensure content diversity and balance between known and unfamiliar sources.

Seven Steps to Build the “For You” Feed

X engineers detailed a seven-stage pipeline for generating recommendations:

  1. Capture user behavior and preferences.
  2. Retrieve content from followed and external accounts.
  3. Enrich content with metadata and user settings.
  4. Filter out blocked, muted, expired, or already seen posts.
  5. Score content using Grok’s engagement predictions.
  6. Select top content based on multi-layered ranking models.
  7. Final compliance and quality checks before user display.

The entire process is built in Rust and Python, under Apache 2.0 license, and is fully automated. No manual feature engineering is used, which reduces complexity and aims for fairer, data-driven results.

Musk’s Push for Openness

Musk claimed the move is part of building a “free square” and making influence more understandable.

Musk admitted:

“

We know the algorithm is dumb and needs massive improvements. But at least you can see us struggle to make it better in real-time and with transparency.

Elon MuskExecutive Chairman – X ( Formerly Twitter )

He emphasized that no other social media company has done this, inviting developers worldwide to contribute to improving the feed system.

Transparency Claims Under Fire

Despite the bold release, X’s transparency track record has come under fire:

  • The EU fined the platform $140 million in December for violating the Digital Services Act.
  • X delayed transparency reports until late 2024, a departure from Twitter’s prior practices.
  • Musk’s verification system changes have been criticized for making it harder to assess content authenticity.

Compounding the issue, Grok has been accused of generating sexualized deepfakes, including images of women and minors, drawing attention from California authorities and lawmakers. Critics argue that the algorithm release may be a distraction tactic to counter these mounting concerns.

SQ Magazine’s Takeaway

I’ll be honest, this feels like a double-edged move. On one hand, it’s incredibly refreshing to see a major platform lay bare its algorithm, something no other social media giant has dared to do. That alone is a big win for transparency and open development. But let’s not ignore the timing. With EU fines, scrutiny over AI misuse, and content moderation issues, this open-source move also looks like damage control. I’m all for algorithmic transparency, but it has to be paired with ethical practices and real accountability. Watching this space closely.
