Anthropic collapsed Claude’s separate chat, Cowork and Artifacts surfaces into a single window on September 16, 2026, and handed the job of picking the right tool to Claude itself. Pro and Max subscribers get the change first.

The Big Picture

  • Anthropic merged Claude’s chat, Cowork and Artifacts surfaces into one window and now routes each request automatically.
  • Claude Docs lets users draft documents in a conversation, comment on finished sections, then export to Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
  • Claude Slides builds and edits presentations inside the same window, with downloads as PowerPoint or PDF files.
  • Pro and Max plans receive the update first on web, desktop and mobile over the coming weeks. Free and Team tiers follow later.
  • Claude Design, launched April 17, 2026, now runs inside any conversation, with no separate entry point.

Claude now decides which tool a request needs

Anthropic said customers often struggled to choose the right tab for the right task, which is the problem the merged front end is built to remove. A user who asks for a deck no longer opens a separate surface for it. Claude reads the request and starts the work in place.

The company described the mechanism plainly. “Claude can now figure out what a task needs, so what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation,” Anthropic said, with a conversation’s existing context and connected tools carried into the work.

That routing rests on a change shipped three weeks earlier. On August 25 Anthropic merged the memory layer behind chat and Cowork so that context learned in one surface survives into the other, on by default across the Free, Pro and Max plans. Without shared memory, a request routed from a chat into an agentic task would arrive with none of the detail the user had already supplied.

Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude.

Ask a quick question or hand over a report, and Claude takes it from there, even after you close your laptop. If something's unclear, Claude asks—you keep the final say.

Docs and Slides aim Claude output at Office and Workspace files

Claude Docs starts every document private, then lets the author share it with collaborators by link and take comments on completed parts. Users can open a document on desktop, walk away, and watch the task progress from the mobile app. Exports go to Google Docs and Microsoft Word.

Claude Slides covers creating, editing and presenting a deck from inside the conversation, and downloads it as a PowerPoint or PDF file. Anthropic already offered that export path through Claude Design, which exports to Canva, PDF, PPTX and HTML for subscribers on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. What changed is placement. Design no longer needs its own destination.

Claude Cowork itself stays in beta on web and mobile while running fully on desktop, and it is already included on those same four plans. Anthropic has not said whether the merged front end changes that beta label. SQ Magazine has tracked the product’s growth in its Claude AI usage statistics.

What the announcement does not settle?

Anthropic’s newsroom and the Claude app release notes carried no entry for the merge on launch day, so the published detail comes from briefings given to reporters at TechCrunch and Engadget. That establishes what the company says the feature does. It does not establish how well the routing works, because no accuracy figure, error rate or override control has been disclosed.

Four gaps sit open:

  • Can a user force a request into chat, Cowork or Design when Claude routes it somewhere else?
  • What date do the Free and Team tiers get the unified interface?
  • Do existing Artifacts and Cowork project workspaces migrate, or do they sit alongside the new surface?
  • Does Cowork leave beta on web and mobile as part of this rollout?

Users already pointing Cowork at local folders should check two settings now that agentic work can begin from any conversation: which folders stay connected, and the toggle that controls whether sensitive topics enter memory. Reviewing both helps reduce the risk of Claude acting on files in a thread the user treated as ordinary chat.

The Bottom Line

The merge trades a navigation decision for a routing decision, and that is a real bet on classifier quality. Every wrong route now costs a user the time it takes to notice Claude went agentic on a question that wanted a two-line answer, or stayed conversational on a task that wanted file access. Anthropic is confident enough in the shared memory layer and the task classifier to make that trade the default for its highest-paying consumer tiers, which is a stronger signal about internal evaluation results than any of the feature copy.

The document and slide exports matter more than the merged navigation. Sending Claude output straight into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint and PDF puts the assistant inside the file formats that corporate work actually moves in, which is the ground Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini already hold through the suites themselves. Watch for three things over the coming weeks: whether Team and Enterprise customers get the merged interface before the Free tier, whether Anthropic publishes any data on routing quality, and whether Cowork’s beta label comes off. The company’s enterprise AI expansion suggests the business tiers are the ones worth watching.
