Chris Eubank Jr. is amongst a host of British boxing prospects with an uncertain future following reports that Channel 5 are set to pull-out of their contract to broadcast the sport.

The fear was sparked this weekend as British boxing promoter Frank Maloney made the shocking admission to iFilm London, after his fighter John McDermott completed a successful comeback at York Hall. If true, fighters including James DeGale, Tyson Fury and Brighton’s Chris Eubank Jr. could face a TV blackout.

Speaking on Friday night, Maloney said: “We’re hearing rumours that Channel 5 are going to be pulling out of boxing. It was circling around ringside tonight. There’s now only a couple of places you can watch boxing.”

If true, Hennessy Promotions, the company tied in to a television deal with Channel 5, will be on the lookout for a new broadcaster. There are already suggestions that this could be why James DeGale’s upcoming fight was recently postponed.

British boxing has lived an uncertain life on terrestrial TV in recent years, with both the BBC and ITV ditching coverage of the sport before Channel 5 picked up the rights in 2011.
