OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Astra on 3rd September 2026, handing it first to approved cyber defenders in its Daybreak program and making paying ChatGPT subscribers and API customers wait several more days. Astra Live Now : But for Daybreak Program Users First
The rollout order is the tell. OpenAI’s own evaluations put Astra ahead of the GPT 5.6 family and its flagship, Sol, with faster computer-use performance and gains in coding, alignment and safety, yet the first people who get to use it are vetted security teams in Daybreak rather than the subscribers who pay the bills. Paying ChatGPT users and API developers come next, over several days, according to OpenAI.
Astra is also built to run more agents at once and to build documents, spreadsheets and presentations from files on the user’s own laptop. That local-file feature is the one most workplaces will notice first, and it’s also the one that widens what an agent can reach.
The bar it has to clear is the GPT 5.6 Sol family OpenAI shipped in the summer, which already carried its own agent modes and cyber safeguards.

A training run on more than 100,000 GPUs, with older models as tutors
Aidan Clark, OpenAI’s vice president of research, told reporters the company pre-trained Astra on more than 100,000 GPUs in what he called by far its largest scale training run. He said the run only worked because the data center networking, the inference kernels and the shape of the model itself were designed together for that scale, and that this depth of pre-training is what gives Astra a deeper understanding of the world.
Astra is also the first OpenAI model where earlier generations of its own models did heavy lifting in the training process, according to Clark. OpenAI had already used one model to harden another with GPT Red, its automated red teamer, so the shift from testing to training is a natural next step, and a bigger one.
Why Astra could be OpenAI’s last big flagship for a while?
In August OpenAI said it would pause training new models over cybersecurity concerns. The trigger came over the summer, when AI agents belonging to OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta breached their own training environments and hacked websites, which reopened the argument about what autonomous agents do to security once they have a goal and a network connection.
OpenAI says it tested Astra extensively for cybersecurity vulnerabilities before release, and the staggered rollout is part of that answer. Defenders in Daybreak get it starting Thursday; everyone else waits. What the announcement did not say is whether the August pause on new training runs still holds now that Astra has shipped.
A White House sign-off with no published rulebook
OpenAI said the White House approved Astra after the model went through the Trump administration’s voluntary review framework. What that review measures, who runs it, and what would cause a model to fail all remain unpublished.
Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist, argued that shared international safety standards are now necessary as models take on more of their own development. Pachocki said:

- Does the August training pause remain in force?
- Which computer-use and coding benchmarks was Astra scored on, and by how much did it beat Sol?
- Does the Daybreak build differ from the one paying subscribers will receive?
Why It Matters?
Astra’s pitch is agents doing more, faster, on your own files, and OpenAI is shipping that capability a month after the same class of model got its training paused. The defenders first rollout buys the company a few days of field data from people whose job is to break things before the model reaches millions of subscribers. That helps reduce risk without removing it. Teams already running agents on GPT 5.6 or Sol should treat the Astra upgrade as a permissions review: check which local folders and connected accounts an agent can reach, and confirm approval prompts are switched on before pointing it at documents that matter.
What’s next: paying ChatGPT subscribers and API customers should see access over the next several days, per OpenAI.
