# Google DeepMind Genie 4 Adds Native Audio and Live Scene Edits

Google DeepMind released Genie 4 as a research preview on 27th October, 2026. The world model generates ambient sound and character dialogue alongside its visuals while users steer the scene with typed prompts in real time.

## Key Facts

- Genie 4 holds a consistent scene for up to two minutes, double the limit of its predecessor, Genie 3.
- Gemini 3.8 Flash runs inside the loop, planning each step and checking frames while Genie 4 renders the world.
- Trusted testers have access now, and Google AI Ultra subscribers plus Gemini API early access partners follow in the coming weeks.
- SynthID, Google’s imperceptible watermark, will tag every video and audio clip that Genie 4 produces.

Sound is the headline addition. Genie 4 is the lab’s first real-time world model to generate audio natively. A beach scene arrives with crashing waves, and characters talk back, reacting on the fly to prompts and to events in the world.

Editing is the other big change. Users can shift the weather, swing the camera, or drop a new person into a running simulation. Gemini then adapts each prompt to fit what is already on screen. Freeform edits rank among the upgrades over Genie 3, which entered research preview a little over a year ago. The [Google DeepMind announcement](https://deepmind.google/blog/genie-4-a-new-generation-of-world-simulation/) also cites better physics, including aerodynamics and collisions, and calls simulated people the most dramatic leap.

## Gemini directs the scene while Genie 4 renders it

Genie 4 leans on Google’s [Gemini AI models](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/google-gemini-ai-statistics/) to stay coherent. **Gemini Omni** anchors each world in real-world appearance and behavior. Gemini 3.8 Flash acts as a guiding agent that breaks a goal into steps and reviews incoming frames to confirm each one landed. When the user intervenes, it rewrites the plan on the spot.

In an experiment tied to Gemini Robotics, a [Gemini 4 Argon model](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/google-gemini-4-argon-launches/) split a task into steps. It fed them to Genie 4 as text captions while the simulation rendered. Teams could use that loop to rehearse robot scenarios before trying them in the physical world.

Tejas Kulkarni, a research director at Google, told a press briefing to expect more of “**these hybrid world models.**” In his telling, Gemini writes code and text while Genie takes it in live and simulates reality at varying levels of detail.

## Testers point Genie 4 at film prototyping

Filmmakers among Google’s trusted testers use Genie 4 as a draft mode for pre-visualization. They step into a live scene and run several takes, changing lighting, dialogue, and camera angles. Photojournalists are testing whether one archival photograph can become an explorable simulation of that place.

**Diego Rivas**, a Google DeepMind engineer, said real-time generation pays off most in ideation and storyboarding. Google’s [Veo video generation model](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/google-veo-3-1-ai-video-editor/) is already growing in popularity among filmmakers. Rivas added that Gemini Omni could eventually turn Genie prototypes into finished assets, though that remains a ways off.

Genie 4 also lands in a consolidating market. Runway shipped **GWM Worlds 2**, its second world model with audio, a couple of months ago. AMD is acquiring **Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs**, and Amazon is in talks to buy Decart. Rivian just bought Third Dimension to bring self-driving simulation in-house.

Google DeepMind calls Genie 4 “**an early, experimental model**” and lists the gaps it has not closed:

- **Visual details and object permanence can drift in longer sessions or after complex prompt edits.**
- **Real-time audio accuracy is still unresolved.**
- **Legible text inside generated worlds is not yet reliable.**
- **Spatial accuracy and long-term consistency remain active research areas.**

Rivas also stressed that the end-to-end product experience is still undefined. Two questions stay open: how long will subscriber sessions run, and will the scene limit rise before developers get API access? Interested users can join the Genie 4 waitlist in Project Genie now. SynthID marks are invisible to the eye, so checking a suspect clip takes a detection tool. They work alongside platform measures such as [automatic AI video labels](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/youtube-automatic-ai-video-labels/).

The first broad test comes when Genie 4 reaches Ultra subscribers in the coming weeks. Paying users will push worlds harder than a curated tester cohort. Object drift in long sessions, the flaw Google itself flags, is the one they are most likely to hit.
