# Users Flock to DuckDuckGo as Google AI Search Faces Backlash

Google’s latest AI-focused search updates are driving more users toward DuckDuckGo as people look for a simpler and more controllable search experience.

## Quick Summary – TLDR:

- DuckDuckGo reported a major increase in app installs in the US after Google I/O 2026.
- iPhone installs for DuckDuckGo surged by nearly **70%** at peak growth.
- Users are reacting to Google’s deeper integration of AI into Search.
- DuckDuckGo is gaining attention by offering users an easy way to avoid AI generated search results.

## What Happened?

Google’s push to turn Search into a more AI powered experience is creating unexpected momentum for rivals like **DuckDuckGo**. Following the company’s announcements at Google I/O 2026, DuckDuckGo reported a sharp rise in app downloads and traffic, especially from users searching for AI free alternatives.

The privacy focused search engine says the growth was strongest in the United States, where many users appear frustrated with Google’s expanding use of AI generated summaries and assistant style search results.

 ## Google’s AI Search Push Triggers User Frustration

At its annual developer conference, Google introduced a major overhaul of Search. The company described it as the biggest upgrade to Search in more than 25 years. New features include AI Overviews, [AI Mode](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/google-chrome-gemini-ai-mode-update/), custom generative interfaces and agent style tools that can complete tasks for users.

Google says these updates are designed to make searching faster and more useful. However, many users online have reacted negatively to the changes. Critics argue that [AI generated answers](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/generative-ai-statistics/) often make simple searches more complicated while also reducing transparency around where information comes from.

Some users are also worried about the accuracy of AI generated content. Earlier AI mistakes connected to Google Search became widely shared online and raised concerns about whether AI systems can always provide reliable answers.

At the same time, publishers and website owners are becoming increasingly concerned about AI summaries reducing traffic to their websites. If users get answers directly from Google’s AI systems, fewer people may click through to the original sources that created the information.

## DuckDuckGo Sees Major Growth in the US

As the backlash against AI heavy search grows, DuckDuckGo appears to be benefiting from the shift in user sentiment.

According to data shared by the company, installs of the DuckDuckGo app in the US increased by an average of **18.1% week over week** between May 20 and May 25. The growth lasted for six consecutive days and peaked at **30.5%** on May 25.

The increase was even more dramatic on [iPhones](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/iphone-ecosystem-statistics/). DuckDuckGo said iOS installs jumped by an average of **33%**, while peak single day growth reached nearly **70%**.

Traffic to **[noai.duckduckgo.com](https://noai.duckduckgo.com)**, DuckDuckGo’s AI free search page, also surged during the same period. Visits reportedly grew by an average of **22.7%**, with peak growth reaching **27.7%**.

Interestingly, the company noted that the growth continued through the Memorial Day weekend in the US, a period when internet activity usually slows down. DuckDuckGo believes this suggests the reaction was tied directly to Google’s US focused AI announcements.

## DuckDuckGo Is Not Rejecting AI Completely

Despite positioning itself as an alternative to AI heavy search, DuckDuckGo is not avoiding AI entirely.

The company already offers its own AI product called **Duck.ai**, which gives users access to models from [OpenAI](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/openai-statistics/), Anthropic, [Meta](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/meta-statistics/) and Mistral AI. It also provides AI assisted search tools similar to Google’s AI Overviews.

The key difference is that DuckDuckGo makes those features optional. Users can disable AI generated answers entirely through a dedicated no AI version of the search engine without changing browser settings or using extensions.

DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg criticized Google’s current direction in a statement shared with TechCrunch.

Weinberg said:

“

Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out. As a result, their results are getting worse, not better. We want to be the place that puts users in charge and allows them to decide how much or how little AI they want.

## SQ Magazine Takeaway

I think this story shows that users are not fully against AI. What people really want is control. Google is betting that AI should become the default experience for everyone, but many users still prefer traditional search that feels clean, fast and predictable.

DuckDuckGo may still be tiny compared to Google, but this sudden growth proves there is real demand for search experiences that do not force AI into every query. If Google ignores this feedback, smaller competitors could slowly gain ground one user at a time.
