# Apple Moves Romantic AI Companions and Dating Apps to 18+

Apple told developers on Monday, November 2, 2026, that dating apps and AI companions offering romance will need a minimum 18+ App Store rating. The rating follows the feature, so any app with a romantic companion mode inherits it.

## At a Glance

- Apple is adding two content descriptors, Dating and Relationships and Shared Location, to the App Store Connect age rating questionnaire.
- Developers must declare whether a virtual companion in their app engages users in sexual or romantic content, which triggers an 18+ minimum rating.
- Location-sharing apps may see different minimum ratings by region, and Brazil requires an A16 rating for that feature under local law.
- Every app on the App Store must answer the two new questions, even apps with no dating or location features at all.

## Companion chatbots land in the adult tier

Apple’s [developer notice](https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=yxkh08us) draws the Dating and Relationships descriptor wide. It covers dating between real people, and it also covers “**a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content.**” Any app that checks that box gets a minimum age rating of 18+.

Most mainstream dating services already limit sign-ups to adults, so the real change lands on AI companion apps. Character.AI, Replika and similar apps let users build friends, partners and fantasy characters, and many of them target younger people. According to TechCrunch, top AI companion apps on the App Store and Google Play had hit **220 million** global downloads by last summer.

xAI pushed the category further last year when it launched 3D animated companions in Grok with NSFW capabilities that users could unlock. Those are exactly the features the new descriptor now names.

Until now, Apple’s 18+ category mostly covered gambling, violence, drug, alcohol and tobacco references, and nudity or sexual content. Romance-capable chatbots now sit in the same tier. The descriptor keys on features, not on what kind of app it is. A [general chatbot](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/chatbot-statistics/) with one romantic persona among many could end up rated 18+ as a whole app.

That matters because virtual girlfriend and boyfriend simulators have drawn warnings about mental health risks for younger users. A feature-level rating lets Apple catch those products even when they sit inside a broader assistant. That leaves fewer cracks for minors to slip through, even on apps that never market themselves as companions.

Chatbot makers have mostly set these limits through their own policies, such as [OpenAI’s ChatGPT teen safety rules](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/openai-chatgpt-teen-safety-rules/). Apple now moves part of that call onto the store listing. The rule also extends Apple’s child safety push this year, which included a global rollout of its age assurance technology. Apple has since previewed new [parental controls and child safety features](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/06/apple-previews-new-child-safety-features/).

## Brazil sets separate location rules

The second descriptor, Shared Location, asks whether an app shares a user’s real-world location with another person or group. Apple said that declaration may not affect minimum ratings in some regions. Location sharing a user doesn’t know about is an obvious privacy risk, and the declaration puts that feature on the record.

Brazil is the exception Apple spelled out. Local rules there require an A16 rating for Shared Location and an A18 rating for Dating and Relationships. Parent-and-child family apps can skip the A16 default by requesting an official rating from **Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP)**. Once the ministry verifies it, Apple will show that rating on the Brazilian App Store.

## What’s Next?

The notice leaves open questions. How will Apple check that a developer’s answers match what the app actually does? What happens to an app that misses the deadline? And how will the new rating work alongside Apple’s age assurance tools on a teen’s device?

The new questions appear in [App Store Connect](https://sqmagazine.co.uk/app-store-statistics/) on November 16. Developers must answer them when they submit an update or edit their age rating questionnaire. Every app needs both declarations filed by January 12, 2027, and any companion app that answers yes on romance gets the 18+ minimum.
