Fresh from conquering the charts with their debut album ‘Stereo Typical’ last year, Brighton duo Rizzle Kicks look to be turning their attention to the world of TV after landing a slot on Friday nights with Channel 4.

‘Smells Like Friday Night’ will be an hour-long live music show presented by Jordan Stephens and Harley Alexander-Sule of Rizzle Kicks fame, alongside comedian Rob Beckett and journalist Billie JD Porter. The show aims to mix live music with comedy-filled chat and the broadcaster claims it will bring “the Channel 4 Friday night feeling viewers know and love.”

The show has been commissioned alongside ‘That Music Show’, a music-themed quiz that will be fronted by current Radio 1 breakfast host, Nick Grimshaw. Both programmes have been selected for pilots by Channel 4 with a view to a regular series if successful. This is the first time that the broadcaster will be producing music-based Friday night TV for over 13 years.

Channel 4′s music commissioning editor Jonathan Rothery added: “We said last year that we wanted to provide a bigger platform for music on Channel 4 and the response from indies has been amazing – around 50 companies pitched over 100 ideas.”

The announcement marks another notch on the belt of the all-conquering Rizzle Kicks, who will release their second album this summer and headline Shakedown Festival.

The owner of a Facebook page which was founded in the memory of Lee Rigby, the soldier killed in Woolwich earlier this week, has defended themselves after a reporter from the Daily Telegraph presented evidence that the page may be linked to the fascist English Defence League (EDL).

‘RIP Woolwich Soldier’ was set up in the aftermath of Wednesday afternoon’s attack and has thus far attracted over 1.4m likes. The owner of the page, unidentified at this stage, has linked it to a JustGiving account, which is looking to raise money for Help For Heroes. As it stands, donations from ‘likers’ have totalled £66,000.

However, Telegraph blogger Jake Wallis Simmons has identified a handful of factors that give strong evidence the page being linked with, or owned by, the EDL, a far-right pressure group looking to eradicate muslim culture from the UK. Simmons says that the page’s imagery matches that of the EDL, while their first post, arguing for the UK to stand against “those who want to destroy us” seems to resonate “with your average typical EDL call to arms, both in tone and in substance.”

Most significantly, the article mentions that “the first organisation that the ‘RIP Woolwich Soldier’ page ‘liked’ was the official page of the English Defence League.” Should the tribute page be a “covert” EDL page as Simmons suggests, more than 1.4m people have made their names available to an EDL member and opened their account to their messages.

Since the Telegraph column was published online last night, the page owner has unliked the official EDL page, while ‘likers’ of ‘RIP Woolwich Solder’ have defended their actions and proclaimed the page’s political independence.

The page owner has also posted: “Trying to simply wish someone RIP and raise money for charity has led to being accused of being affiliated to far right groups. We liked many pages to get this page in front of the masses. Unfortunately one of these pages has been singled out to try and taint our purpose.”

Most recently, administrators have altered the page’s bio section to reject the notion of having any political affiliation.

With electronic music taking its place at the forefront of mainstream music, Random Access Memories has been met by a greater audience than any of Daft Punk’s previous releases. This has set it on course to become 2013’s fastest selling album and kept ‘Get Lucky’ at number one for five weeks straight.

Those expecting a high energy, high BPM sample fest have been downright disappointed though. Instead we’ve got songs which are more likely to make you want to move like James Brown than crack out the robot.

When the album’s at its best, the music projects the band’s influences. With the help of Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers, the sound echoes late 70’s U.S style funk and combines the style with the DJ’s distinctly French touch. While keeping the Daft Punk feel, various musical styles are explored with a number of other collaborators including The Strokes front man Julian Casablancas, music producer Todd Edwards and Pharrell Williams.

A statement is made from the first track which sets the theme throughout. ‘Give Life Back to Music’ is a proposal of what Daft Punk intends to do throughout the album. This means real instruments being recorded, human voices being heard and a connection between the listener and the people behind the robot masks.

It’s followed up by ‘The Game of Love’ which is unlikely to get your toes tapping but does come with the important message that robots have feelings too. It leads nicely into ‘Giorgio by Moroder’. The story of how synthesiser legend Giorgio Moroder came into contact with electronic equipment and decided the synth was the sound of the future. His voice is set to a backdrop of intermittent funk, free jazz, rock and orchestral music. All the time you’re aware the robots are filtering the sounds through the various studios being used on the album.

At this point there’s a lowlight for me. ‘Within’ sounds like an Andrew Lloyd Webber number if he was to write the score for a musical chick flick with C-3PO from Star Wars cast as a betrayed romantic.

The rest of the album makes up for this slight deviation though and the Julian Casablancas collaboration ‘Instant Crush’ is the best song the singer has been a part of since The Strokes ‘First Impression of Earth’ in 2006.

The mood is then taken upwards with Pharrell Williams’ first of two contributions on ‘Lose Yourself to Dance’. I actually prefer it to ‘Get Lucky’ because the lyrics feel less weird despite the fact Williams offers his shirt throughout to wipe the sweat you’ve been working up. Much like on ‘Get Lucky’, Pharrell’s voice and Nile Rodgers’ bright funk guitar sound fresh and stylish together and stylish is the word id use to describe the second half of the album.

‘Beyond’ and ‘Motherboard cruise at you in second gear, staying calm and collected as you get more and more familiar with the sound of the album as a whole. They set you up for a crowd pleaser in ‘Fragments of Time’ sung by American vocal mixer Todd Edwards.

While forgettable in itself, ‘Doin’ it Right’ serves a purpose in bridging the gap in intensity between ‘Fragments of Time’ and the big finale, ‘Contact’. ‘Contact’ is definitely an ending song. The robot’s visit is over and the spaceship is taking off. The duo remind you they are still making progressive and genre crossing songs and they are still making sounds that sound alien, even if it’s not immediately apparent at the first listen.

What makes this album as relevant as their first album ‘Homework’ is the refusal to stand still musically. They haven’t picked up from where they left off and neither have they played up to trends in electronic and house music today. Instead ‘Random Access Memories’ takes a look back to move forward and the result is a unique creation.

Welcome to May’s Showcase – a sort of Great Escape special. If any of you were lucky enough to attend The Great Escape festival, you’d have discovered a plethora of awesome bands on the rise. Or just got inebriated for three days. Or both!

If you couldn’t make it to The Great Escape or suffered slight amnesia and forgot who were good, we’ve listed just some of the best South Coast sounds at the festival.

Anuska – Yes Guess

The Brighton-based duo, comprised of Max Wheeler and Victoria Port, might evoke similarities with AlunaGeorge in set-up but their musical influences occupy different spectrums. On ‘Yes Guess’, Max constructs a moody techno beat with 90s keys while Victoria splashes it with soulful vocals that breathe life into the track. After seeing AluneGeorge make waves all over the radio with their modern twist on RnB, it’s difficult to see why Anushka can’t make a similar impact. In essence, a thoroughly danceable track from a duo with plenty more to give.

Pipe and Tabor – The Love Settee

Pipe and Tabor consists of Horsham-duo Carly Stubbs (vocals) and Dean Morris (acoustic guitar). They knit a picturesque brand of British-folk that evokes images of idyllic countryside with a humorous twist in the lyrics. Due to the nature of a minimalist set-up, Pipe and Tabor’s appeal hinges on the Carly’s charming vocals while Dean shapes masterful melodies with his guitar. Their modern interpretation of traditional folk is delightfully simple and ‘The Love Settee’ will help you gleefully frolic the days away.

The Wytches – Beehive Queen

It’s really annoying being forced to come back to a band we talked about only two months ago. But it’s simply impossible to resist. They made a thumping impact at The Great Escape and judging from their new track ‘Beehive Queen’, you can see why. The Wytches conjure up a sound that’s still wreathed in surf-rock guitars but delivered with ghastly pomp. And Kristian Bell sings with such aplomb you’d expect a party-demon being summoned from the shaking earth beneath your stomping feet.

Tall Ships – Phosphorescence (Live Acoustic)

If you’ve heard their keyboard-driven ‘Phosphorescence’ that’s full of instrumental delights, you’d be forgiven for thinking that an acoustic version might not work. Quite the opposite. In fact, the stripped-back version produces an alluringly tranquil track that’s more reflective of the song title. The highlight is Ric Phethean’s vulnerable vocals which you don’t get in the full-blooded version while the gentle guitar sends you into a wistful daze. But the best thing of all is that you can download it for free straight from their SoundCloud.

Rachel Hawker and The Remedies – Enough To Go Around

Rachel Hawker is a singer-songwriter who’s indulged in music from the age of 8. And since then, she has been developing her craft to produce a smooth, eloquent sound with a soulful flourish. Although she can play solo, Rachel is often accompanied by a backing band, The Remedies, who not only provide extra instrumental layers but also backing vocals. ‘Enough To Go Around’ is a dainty little track with considered arrangements; a soundtrack for glowing amber sunsets.

Fear Of Men – Seer

Inherently, Fear Of Men are a four-piece with pop sensibilities but there is also a driving desire to experiment. Perhaps this is a result of the time Jess (lead vocals) invested into her Art degree – which also explains the glistening aesthetics to their sound. But in the end, you’re left with a charming track strung together by jangly guitars and quaint vocals that evokes memories of C86 bands; the kind of bands that made this brand of indie-pop cult classics. It’ll be interesting to see whether they follow the likes of The Field Mice or if they’ll become a more mainstream success.

The New Union – Staying Friends

Immediately, the riff pulls you in and coalesce the whole track together. It is undoubtedly a more pop-centric venture than their previous tracks but the Brighton-based quartet are simply exercising their ability to adapt to the nature of a track. ‘Staying Friends’ blends indie-rock guitars and sentimental themes with assured swagger. Guitar bands tend to struggle nowadays though, so it’ll be interesting to see if The New Union continue on their current path or try and take their sound to another level.

Dave Blackwell – Down To The Sea

The folky singer-songwriter very recently released an EP titled The King of England and to be honest, any of the tracks could have featured here. Dave weaves intricate melodies and sings with poignancy; a potent mix for songs that simmer with emotion and glide with guile. This is best reflected by the understated ‘Down To The Sea’, a delicate number directed by Dave’s baritone vocals spinning pastoral images. As usual though, it’s never about one track. If you like this, download the entire EP for free from Dave’s SoundCloud because the title track also carries a soothing charm.

IYES – Glow

There are two things to note about The Great Escape festival: one; you are not guaranteed entry into capacity-limited venues and two; The Alternative Escape (which is free) runs alongside the main events. Fellow Brightonians, IYES seemed to be aware of this because despite playing at The Blind Tiger for BBC Introducing (which it must be said is a popular but certainly not the biggest venue) they also played at The Mesmerist for The Alternative Escape. So there really was no excuse for missing IYES’ fantastical sounds full of spritely textures and subtle hues. In ‘Glow’, the indie-electro duo unite euphoric vocals with ethereal soundscapes. The palette of sounds is vibrant with a mystical vibe reminiscent of Zelda soundtrack. It’s just a shame this is only a demo version and therefore too short.

London Grammar – Wasting My Young Years

It must be confessed, we’re slightly ashamed borders have been crossed in order to select this track. And it’s not as if The Great Escape was lacking local talent. Put simply, London Grammar’s ‘Wasting My Young Years’ is a track that instantly pricks ears. Goosebumps rise with enthusiasm as the sound of a tender piano and Hannah Reid’s soothing vocals fuse with aching beauty. Then hairs stand on end as the track soars into a skyline swathed in dreamy guitar hooks and airy synths. It’s a tune that brings the night alive.
The run-up to Shakedown Festival has taken another step in the right direction as organisers have moved to confirm the line up for the brand new Audio Arena at this summer’s festival in association with Brighton’s leading club, Audio.

Headlining the Audio Arena will be Radio 1’s Queen of Friday Night, Annie Mac. Annie Mac’s show is a feast of upcoming, underground and exclusive new dance tunes and she has rapidly made her mark on the party circuit with regular high profile sets at venues such as Fabric London and Digital Brighton. Her DJ sets are famously unpredictable and addictive, jumping from genre to genre with ease.

Deep house guru Kerri Chandler also joins the Audio Arena for 2013. Producing and DJ’ing house music as far back as the genre’s early 90s heyday, Kerri has been going strong from the genre’s origins right up to its recent massive revival. Coming from a background of soul, jazz and disco, expect a set of infectious, soulful and funky house from Kerri’s Audio Arena set.

The other big name to land at the Audio Arena is Toddla T. He’s officially released his brand new concept bridging the gap between his infamous DJ sets and a full out live show. The Toddla T Sound features both elements of live performance and DJ’ing with live vocalists, including Shola Ama, Serocee and MC DRS. The show will also be augmented with the bespoke visuals of Sheffield designers, Peter and Paul.

Headlining the main stage at Shakedown this year will be Brighton boys Rizzle Kicks, who are due to launch their second album this summer. Joining them at the top of the bill will be Labrinth, Maverick Sabre and Delilah.

With more acts to be added Shakedown will be a fitting end to the summer festival season.

An overwhelming number of students from Nottingham University have voiced their opposition at the institution’s decision to invite the unashamedly elitist clothing label Abercrombie & Fitch to its careers fair.

In a poll conducted by the university’s student paper, 78% of students wanted university management to retract its careers fair invitation to the company, who have a well-publicised history of casting prejudice against both employees and customers based on appearance.

Abercrombie’s CEO Mike Jeffries found himself in the headlines recently when quotes from an interview conducted in 2006 finally hit the headlines. Speaking to Salon, he said: “A lot of people don’t belong in our clothes, and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. Those companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny.”

This isn’t the first time that the label has found itself in murky water. In 2002, the brand was forced to pull a string of t-shirts that were deemed racially insensitive and just three years later, A&F were in the line of fire for creating a line for pre-teen females with sexually suggestive phrases printed across the chest including “Who needs a job when you have these?”.

Nottingham University defended itself, saying: ““We do not think it is appropriate to withdraw the opportunities to those students interested in a possible career with this company on the basis of one person’s ill-considered remarks. Our students are adults and are able to make their own decisions about whether or not they engage with any particular organisation.”

Although some students supported the appearance of A&F, second year sociologist and Nottingham student Will Hazell said: “There should not be any room within this University for exclusive, preening vanity. If Abercrombie & Fitch wants to exclude people they deem to be ‘uncool’, then the University of Nottingham should exclude A&F.”

The other option? Embarrass them: #FitchTheHomeless.

Nearly two months to the day since Playstation revealed, or actually didn’t reveal, their new generation of console, Microsoft’s Xbox is back and teeing itself up to continue its dominance in the video-gaming world.

A lot has changed since Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 in 2005, with their 2nd generation console a clear underdog hoping to climb the ladder of the then industry leaders Nintendo and Sony.

On Tuesday however, going into its third cycle of hardware, Microsoft’s Xbox finds itself in a far more comfortable position. Much has changed in the video game landscape since Microsoft unveiled the Xbox 360 in 2005.

Back then, Microsoft was a clear underdog, hoping to cut into the leads held by rival consoles from Nintendo and Sony. The Xbox had a core following, to be sure. But it also had plenty of ground to make up.

Despite strong sales for both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in Europe, both reaching over 140,000 sales in December 2012 alone, Sony’s latest hardware has widely been considered a flop in markets across the world, except Japan, due to its weaker online multiplayer service.

Will we see a shift in market leader again? Only time will tell. Tune in tonight at 6pm GMT.

Back in January, MPs voted in favour of a proposal to lower the voting age across all UK elections from 18 to 16. This is potentially a huge move for UK politics, but what does it really mean for people on the ground, and why does it matter?

While the Commons passed the motion by a majority of 73, the Conservative government isn’t tied in to making these changes just yet. In fact, with many government figures opposing this move, we’re unsure on just how far this issue will go.

We heard from Solomon Curtis (Member of Youth Parliament) and Phillip Davies (MP).

I’ve never questioned that 16 year olds should have the right to vote and I’ve always felt young people earn the right to participate in national democracy. With Youth Parliament elections achieving higher turnouts than local elections, there is no question that young people are interested in our politics and want to participate.

We often talk about engaging more people in politics, so it’s ludicrous that the very people who want to vote (16 and 17-year-olds) are denied it. At 16, you can pay taxes, live on your own or even marry your MP(!), yet you can’t vote to decide who runs the tax system, who influences the housing market or who your MP is?

Many argue that ‘few countries allow 16-year-olds to vote so why should we’, well my response is by Harold McAlindon: “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail”. We’ve always been a leading nation, leading the way for true democracy and in my view 16-year-olds have earned the right to vote.

If people aren’t capable as the House sees of making the decision as to whether or not to smoke at the age of 16 when why does he think they are capable of deciding which party should be in government at the age of 16?

If talking finance, people pay tax based on their income, not their age. Presumably, massively talented child actors who earn an absolute fortune working on films pay tax on their income if it goes above a certain threshold. If an eight-year-old child star earns a fortune and therefore has to pay tax on that income, are we putting forward the view that that eight-year-old should be able to vote?

There is nothing so nauseating and ridiculous as seeing MPs trying to court the youth vote—trying to appear trendy by wanting to pursue these sorts of youth matters. That is what this is all about; it is about MPs trying to look trendy and youthful in their constituencies. To be perfectly honest, it is rather pathetic.

(Speaking in Parliament, 24th Jan 2013)

After making a triumphant comeback at this year’s Comic Relief following ten years away from UK TV screens, David Brent has been revived once more for the first episode in a new YouTube series, ‘Learn Guitar with David Brent’.

Brent was originally played by Ricky Gervais in the iconic all-conquering BBC sitcom, ‘The Office’, across twelve episodes and a two-part Christmas special. While some may have seen Brent’s cameo appearances in a recent season of the US take on The Office, this is the first time that he’ll return for a regular series.

In this opening episode, Slough’s finest gives us a very rough introduction to some different chords before debuting a new track based on his day job as a sales rep, ‘Life On The Road’. The show has promised to showcase some of Brent’s best musical work, which was made famous in the first series of The Office thanks to his signature song, ‘Free Love Freeway’.

Another hit for Ricky Gervais or something of a bum note?

While the final day of the 2012/13 Premier League season didn’t throw up drama in the manner of previous years, the preceding ten months brought about some of the most memorable footballing stories we’ve ever seen including the good, the bad and too often, the ugly – yes, Luis Suarez, we’re looking at you.

It was far from a vintage year for English clubs in the Champions League, which led to an all-out inquiry amongst football’s talking heads on the drastic decline of the Premier League but with a record-equalling average of 2.8 goals a game, that doesn’t mean weren’t privileged in seeing some top-tier action.

With all 380 matches now behind us, the time is right to look back on the year gone and reflect on the unsung heroes who made their mark on the footballing world.

This is SQ Magazine’s ‘alternative’ team of the season for 2012/13.

GK: Asmir Begović (Stoke City)

This Bosnian stopper has been mooted as a long-term target for some of the Premier League’s elite outfits and this past season he showed why. While Stoke have stuttered this season, perhaps for the first time in their Premier League lifetime, Begović has been ever-dependable at the back and provided leadership when needed. In spite of his teammate’s adequate showings this year, the ‘keeper still collected 12 clean sheets.

Did you know? Begović will face competition from England’s Jack Butland at Stoke next year.

RB: Rafael da Silva (Manchester United)

While his twin-brother Fabio suffered relegation while on-loan at QPR, Rafael ended his season by picking up his third Premier League winner’s medal. Long criticised for being too lightweight and wasteful with the ball, the Brazilian has added maturity to his game this year and finally looks like an ample replacement for Gary Neville. We still haven’t forgotten that screamer at Loftus Road either.

Did you know? Three of Rafael’s five Premier League goals came this season.

CB: Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal)

The French defender finally came of age in an Arsenal shirt this season after two previous years of inconsistency. An outstanding performance in Arsenal’s 2-0 win at Bayern Munich in the Champions League kickstarted a run of form that ended club captain Thomas Vermaelen’s run in the side and secured the Gunners’ European football next term. If Koscielny keeps this up, Arsenal could be contenders next year.

Did you know? Arsenal were unbeaten in their final ten games this season.

CB: Ashley Williams (Swansea)

All the way up to the League Cup final, Swansea were proving to be the Premier League’s surprise package and this man underlined the club’s determination to up their game. One of the team’s longest serving players, Williams has taken to the Premier League like a, er – ‘swan’ to water and is worthy of acclaim. Williams possesses pace, power and discipline in abundance…despite the ‘attempted murder’ of RVP.

Did you know? Williams intercepted 111 passes over the course of the season.

LB: Luke Shaw (Southampton)

This season saw a 17-year-old left-back burst onto the scene at Southampton, catching the attention of North London giants in the process. Where have we heard that before? While it’s too early to say whether Shaw will go on to make Bale-like strides of greatness, he’s been an undisputed success at this level of the game and only seven losses in 25 appearances for Southampton proves his value.

Did you know? Shaw provided 41 crosses for his teammates during the 2012/13 season.

CM: Shaun Maloney (Wigan Athletic)

It’s fair to say that it’s been a mixed season for Wigan. Amongst the highs of FA Cup glory and the lows of Premier League relegation, the excellent form of Shaun Maloney has been a welcome constant. The 30-year-old has been the club’s oustanding performer and fits perfectly into Martinez’s fluid style of football. Comfortable on the ball and with an eye for goal, surely too good for the Championship?

Did you know? Maloney was involved in 15 goals this year, scoring six and assisting nine.

CM: Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton)

There was no better holding midfield player in the Premier League this season than Southampton’s French dominator. The Saints were surprisingly tough to beat this year and much of that falls down to Schneirderlin, who made more successful tackles than any other player in the entire country. The midfield man also displayed an eye for goal, netting five times. At only 23, the best is yet to come.

Did you know? Schneriderlin also made 139 interceptions, a Premier League record.

CM: Santi Cazorla (Arsenal)

The Premier League always needs some Spanish flair and this year, no-one did it better than Santi Cazorla. There was expectation on his shoulders when Arsenal shelled out £16m for his services at the start of the season but he’s been worth every penny, displaying elegance, intelligence and poise in each of his 38 league appearances this year. 12 goals and 13 assists tell you all you need to know.

Did you know? Cazorla was one of four players to hit double figures in goals and assists.

RW: Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool)

Since signing for the club in January, Philippe Coutinho has transformed Liverpool into a quicker, slicker and far more dangerous side. In only 13 appearances this season, the Brazilian maestro has played a hand in 10 goals and formed a wonderful understanding with fellow new-boy Daniel Sturridge. This boy will have a big say in how successful Bredan Rodgers’ reign is at Liverpool. A special talent.

Did you know? Before signing for Liverpool, Coutinho was involved in just one goal all year.

ST: Christian Benteke (Aston Villa)

No individual has played a bigger role in their team’s fortunes this season than Christian Benteke. Thought of as a gamble at £7m before the season started, the Belgian has been in blistering form, lending a hand in 49% of Villa’s goals this season. Benteke is loaded with promise and manhandled the Premier League champions for 90 mins in November. 19 league goals in a debut season is remarkable.

Did you know? Benteke scored more goals in a league campaign than any Villa player ever.

LW: Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

While it may seem harsh to throw Daniel Sturridge back out on the left-wing after starring in a central role, he just couldn’t be left out. While Suarez continues to dominate headlines on the red half of Merseyside, Sturridge has gone about his business in stunning fashion, hitting 10 league goals since his January arrival. The trio of Coutinho, Sturridge and Suarez are a match for any Premier League defence.

Did you know? Sturridge hit 10 goals for Liverpool quicker than any other player in history.

Substitutes: Brad Guzan (GK, Aston Villa), Seamus Coleman (RB, Everton), Sebastian Bassong (CB, Norwich City), Mohamed Diamé (CM, West Ham), Frank Lampard (CM, Chelsea), Arouna Koné (ST, Wigan Athletic), Romelu Lukaku (ST, West Bromwich Albion).
