Wrestling with Reality

Wrestling With Reality is the latest documentary from SQ Magazine, a series of one-off specials that offers the chance to get brief glimpses into the worlds of individuals and sub-cultures that are often shunned, misunderstood or downright bizarre.

In this latest instalment, SQ’s Lewis Scrafton travels the UK to immerse himself within the world of British professional wrestling, a scene made up almost entirely of part-timers and hobbyists – but draws crowds in their droves to leisure centres up and down the country.

On his journey, Lewis meets some of the fans who regularly attend live British wrestling events, an associate tutor at the University of Sussex, Benjamin Litherland, who’s writing his PhD thesis on ‘English Professional Wrestling’ as well as the industry’s premier husband and wife wrestling duo, who also run the Extreme Academy of Wrestling school in Hastings.

Keen to find out how a couple form a successful tag-team partnership outside of the ring, Lewis speaks to Stu Allen, a professional wrestler, promoter and full-time undertaker for the past 20 years as well as his wife, Tarnya aka “Skarlett, the Bombshell from Hell” who runs her own coffee shop but actively wrestles against her husband on weekends.
