Rough Guide: Our top picks for The Great Escape 2014

The Great Escape

Now in its 9th year, The Great Escape continues to deliver year on year by serving up music acts on the cusp of international breakthroughs, having hosted the likes of Adele, Tinie Tempah, The XX and Bastille down the years.

2014 seeks to continue this hot-streak in touting some of the biggest emerging names before the charts have got their hands on them alongside major headline acts. The three-day festival will run between the 8th–10th May with over 400 up and coming bands in total playing in 35 Brighton venues, accessible on just one wristband.

Highlights from this year’s line-up are plentiful with UK pop-rapper Example and R&B queen Kelis leading the way (and potentially bringing the boys to the yard) towards more unknown and undiscovered gems.

Recent chart sensations Clean Bandit, the British electronic outfit who teamed up with Jess Glynne for their hit ‘Rather Be’ that debuted at number one on the charts are both set to feature at TGE. Scottish producer Show N Prove who’s remained a regular collaborator of the UK’s finest urban acts will support Example at his Brighton Dome show on the 8th May.

Ella Eyre, the feisty 19-year-old singer-songwriter named number 2 on the BBC’s sound of 2014 already has an impressive list of collaborators including Rudimental, Naughty Boy and Bastille, will lend her growling vocals to support Kelis on her headline show on 10th May.

Looking more locally, recent track of the week feature, Salt Ashes is a sure-fire pick for if you like 80s electronica smeared in murky textures and is one to watch for a future spot in that BBC sound list. Brighton based Phoria are also set to bring their sound to the three-day seaside festival, and although their sound may not be accessible to everyone, their blend of electronica and post-rock will demand your attention.

Elli Ingram, one of our favourite Brighton born singer songwriters, who recently released her second EP ‘The Doghouse’ and headlined the SQ Issue #10 launch party back in October last year continues to break ground in the industry. At this year’s Great Escape, she’s landed herself one of her first slots at many more festivals to come.

George Ezra is another young act making waves and set to surprise a few at TGE, since releasing his EP Cassy O’ earlier in March he’s started to gain the public’s attention. Citing Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie as his musical influences, Ezra’s sound has been described as bluesy, with a voice beyond his 20 years.

Uzoechi Osisioma Emenike aka MNEK, the 19-year-old Lewisham born singer and producer of Nigerian descent has become a fairly well-known name in a short amount of time since registering producer credits with the likes of Far East Movement, Sub Focus and Gorgon City. The latter of that trio will also appear at a venue during the three days.

But the names don’t stop there, from our brief round-up we’re ending with a handful of some you may know and some you will eventually know – that’s normally the way with TGE. Charlie XCX who should be one you recognise has been remarked as having “the spookiness of Siouxsie Sioux” or reminiscent of a “flawless early-Madonna”. In addition Flux Pavilion will be making an appearance, Jungle a secretive duo melting every blog in the land and finally Ftse, who is best described if you “think Jarvis Cocker in Burial’s body” as described The Guardian’s Paul Lester.
