David Willetts pulls out of Sussex Uni lecture amid talks of student protests

Universities minister David Willetts has pulled out of a guest lecture he was due to give at the University of Sussex next Wednesday (March 12th) amid concerns that students are set to protest his appearance on campus.

Conservative MP David Willetts hasn’t endeared himself to students since becoming the government’s representative on higher education, with the trebling of tuition fees to £9,000 and privatisation of the student loan book amongst his controversial changes.

An email sent to University of Sussex Education Officer Juliette Cule said:

“Unfortunately, I have just heard that David must unfortunately pull out of this event next week. There is a three line whip on Parliamentary duties that evening which means that he will be expected to be available to vote in the Commons.

I am sorry that we have to let you down at such short notice.”

While an MP can face serious consequences if they don’t attend a three-line whip, it’s perfect timing for Willetts and the minister is unlikely to be upset at missing Sussex students hijacking his appearance to protest his track record in government.

A Facebook event, ‘David Willetts Comes To Sussex’, currently has 146 people attending with plans to “show the man forcing you to pay outrageous tuition fees, saddling you with huge amounts of debt, and cutting funds to your course EXACTLY what you think of him.”

It’s unknown whether David Willetts will be rescheduling his appearance for a later date.
