WATCH: Scientist Bill Nye debate evolution with creation apologist Ken Ham

In a move to help promote scientific literacy and understanding, last night, Bill Nye the Science guy debated evolution with the president of Kentucky’s Creation museum, Ken Ham.

Ham is a Young Earth Creationist, meaning he believes the Earth is only around 6,000 years old and follows the literal interpretation of the Genesis creation narrative from the bible, Noah’s ark, the flood for 40 days and 40 nights, the lot. Nye on the other hand is a scientist and critically acclaimed author who draws upon the wealth of evidence suggesting the Earth was formed over 4 billion years ago and that life descended from a common ancestor. It’s probably not impossible to call where this one goes…

However, Nye has faced criticism over his decision to even participate in the debate with a creation apologist, with many scientists citing the belief as pure mythology. “I decided to participate in the debate because I felt it would draw attention to the importance of science education here in the United States,” Nye wrote in a piece for CNN before the event. “I’m excited and very much looking forward to the encounter.”

The Guardian’s Pete Etchell’s wrote in a review of the event:

By standing on a stage alongside Nye, Ham appears to have a legitimate and equally opposing viewpoint to him, suggesting that evolution is somehow controversial and poorly evidenced. This could not be further from the truth.
