A New Era Begins: Print is dead, we’re going online only

End Of An Era POST

After ten issues spanning nearly four unforgettable years, we’ve taken the difficult decision to end SQ Magazine’s life as a physically printed publication. From here on in, we’re going to be online only.

While this may seem like a cause for mourning and a cue to grab the handkerchiefs, it really isn’t. Last summer, amidst an explosion of sustained web traffic, we came to realise that stretching resources in order to fund and operate both a quarterly print product and a daily-updated website wasn’t going to work for much longer.

This isn’t a decision taken lightly but we’ve done it in complete confidence. With our original content now finding a life of its own online, the SQ site welcoming new visitors every day and an award from the Guardian for our digital content rounding off 2013, we feel that now is the right time to enter the next phase of our journey.

Last year, we published nearly 500 stories online and attained over 275,000 unique visits – more than the efforts of our previous two years combined. Alongside that, we worked hard to launch our first podcast series and produced episodes of SQtv on the side. Creating viral, captivating and impulsive web content became our priority.

Print was always going to be the birth of SQ Magazine but, even in 2009, we realised that producing a physical magazine would be bucking the trend. Print media was always going to be our legacy, never our future.

Producing a milestone tenth issue was the perfect way to end this part of SQ’s life and we couldn’t have gone out on a higher note than with a sold-out launch event at Brighton’s fantastic Green Door Store. None of it would have been possible without the support of our contributors, our advertisers and of course, our readers.

Thanks for the support, we’re just getting started.
