EVENT PREVIEW: See Festival (24th March – 1st April)

Posted on Friday, 23 March by

This weekend Brighton becomes a haven for media critics and enthusiastic film-making students, as the city welcomes back See Festival, a weeklong celebration of international documentaries.

The previous six years of the event has seen mad success, with some of the most celebrated documentarians in the world gracing Sussex. Louis Theroux, Nick Broomfield and Luke Holland have made past visits to the festival and this year is set to draw wide acclaim again, with a diverse selection of film screenings, seminars, Q&As and master classes.

Headlining proceedings this year is a BAFTA produced masterclass of the TV show at the heart of tabloid news agendas, The Only Way Is Essex. A panel including former cast member Kirk Norcross will take guests behind the tears, tantrums and vajazzles to deconstruct structured reality. So whether you’re an unashamed fan of trash TV or a media-savvy student, there’s no reason to miss it.

Elsewhere, See Festival have this year put together a series of film screenings to cater for Brighton’s varied tastes, exploring contemporary global issues of revolution and conflict, as well as a selection of evening screenings offering you the chance to discover hidden worlds and kick back to the very best music docs.

If that’s not enough to tickle your interest, showcases from students of both Sussex and Brighton universities will be premiering their own ventures into the practice of documentary, with those students behind the films also taking Q&A sessions afterwards.

Truth be told, See Festival looks like being one of the most intriguing and diverse events to mark on our calendars this year.
